      DIY Headers...

How many have made their own headers? (not including the build shops on here) My setup is a bit unique, no off the shelf headers will fit with the K-member/oil pan/clutch cable setup I have. Plus, with the modified shock towers I want to take advantage of the room.

Due to lack of options in San Diego (for various reasons), I am considering doing them myself. I always enjoy challenges. I MIG good and have access to a TIG, but there will be a learning curve for sure.

      I found this: http://www.icengineworks.com/icewmain.htm

I think it would be more accruate than this: http://www.stainlessheaders.com/customheaders

      Thoughts? Suggestions?

I've been refereed to Lemons Headers and Performance Welding Racing Headers. They are both 6+ hours north of me.

An article in Car Craft by our very own John Parsons

No fancy tools, just a few bends and some ingenuity.

Thanks Rhino! I've made several sets of headers since then, and that's still my basic method. I've looked at the ICE stuff a bunch of times (and even talked to the inventor at PRI), but it's too expensive for just a header or two. For professional use, I'd probably swallow hard and go get that kit.

you could always take a ride up to the Los Angelos area and go to Lemon headers they can make you a custom set that is designed to fit right and balance all the tubes.

Thanks for the info all. I decided on doing it myself. Lemons headers is a bit far from me. 330 miles one way. Call me crazy but 200 miles past LA is not really the LA area...

Another option I used on my 70 Mustang was to start with a set that were "close" and then start modifying and use aftermarket collectors. It's tough to get a perfect seal on the aftermarket collectors, but with an expander, patience, and determination you can get there. I did it with a MIG and a grinder, but now that I have my own TIG, the next set will be much nicer. It is a ton of work, but there is no other way if you have special requirements and don't want to take the car to someone else.
