      TIRE/wheel size opionons please

      Hey guys,

I searched the threads and probably got more confused than informed......I am doing a 65 GTO and am trying to determine what wheel/tire size to use. I am planning on mini tubbing and narrowing the frame and rear end to fit a 315 rear tire. The car is fair sized so I thought an 18 inch front and rear wheel would look good but I have also seen 17/18 and 18/19 combos that looked good (i think 20's are a little too large for me). I will have either air ride or adjustable front and rear coilovers and would like the car to maintain a little "old school" rake. The car will rarely, if ever, see the dragstrip and will be a street car with some PT components. My main question is what is a "good looking" tire??? 315/30, 35, 40, 45 etc.....I would like a nice sidewall and avoid the "rubber band" look. I also would like a tire that is true to size as, I have seen various tires that were different in physical size but the same numeric size. I would like something that would be readily available (goodyear, bfg, etc) and not too exotic. Thanks for your input and I apologize for the long-winded rambling question.

We did Bills 65 GTO so we can handle all your dimensions including Wheel / Tire Size, Back Space, Rear End Width,

Were it me I would do 18" front and 19" Rear. Like I said, we have been there done that. I even have detailed pics of the frame narrow and minitubbing if you need a reference.

Check out the GTO here. This one has 19s and 20s, bt I have a 18 / 19 Combo in mind I like better

      Thanks,

I have seen Bill's goat and have referred to it often. I was thinking about how 18/19 combo would look, but what kind of sidewall can I get in a 315/??/19......I still want to try to keep a decent sidewall and avoid too skinny of a sidewall

Good Year makes a tire for the Ford GT that is 315/40/19 that would fill up the wheelwells with a big sidewall and give you the look you're after. If you go 18s in back, don't stagger the diameter with 17s in front because they'll look odd proportionately.

Thanks!!!!! the goodyear 40 sidewall sounds like the perfect solution

Bill and I both agree if the 345/30/19 would have been available when we did his car we would have run those instead. We decided a 27" tall tire was perfect, and the only thing at that time was the 345/25/20s.

If your narrowing the frame and tubing anyway, no way would I use a 315. 345 or 355 would be my choice as even the 345s on Bills car do not look nearly as big as they do on a Camaro because of the girth of the body on that car.

The 315/40/19 is a super tall tire at 29". The wheelwells on that car are 33" so it can carry that much tire, but when you have a tire that is 14 1/2" radius, to get the car a low stance your going to have to raise the tubs as you widen them, or you going to have the rear of the car pretty high. If you pull it off it will look tough as hell, like a Muscle Machine Die Cast. Your just going to be doing a lot of fab work for it.

For me a 27" on a 19 in the rear and a 25.5" to 26" on a 18 on the front will give perfect tire stagger, equal aspect ratio, and fill the wheel wells perfect.

For sidewall a reference, There are 2 cars on our ProdigyCustoms.com site in the projects section with 345/30/19. EmptyNest and Payback.
