      20/18 combo on Chevelle

Allright fellas, i need your opinions. i have a70 chevelle that i will be building up. My ultimate end result is a Air aide tech ls motored pro-touring car. Since I have limited funds(wife, kids, etc) i plan on building the stock suspension around a 468BBC and 700r4, and mostly stock suspension, with the exception of 2" drop spindles and springs on the 4 corners. Is it possible to stick a 20x10 in the rear and 18x8 up front? i know the 18x8's wil fit without a problem, but i want to make sure that a 20x10 will fit in the rear even with an airride setup. I'm leaning towards the torq-thrust II's at this point. Would this be a solid foundation for a relatively stock build up, with the intentions of later going full on protouring with big brakes? Thanks and any opinions or suggestions are appreciated

id go 20s all the way around, 18's in the front look tiny on big cars like that.

20x10's with 5.75"-6" backspacing will fit fine on your 70. In 1996,I ran 18x8 & 20x10 TT II's on my 68 El Camino with 468" bbc and 700R4.

Just had my new wheels fitted up last week on my 65 Chevelle. 20x10 6"bs in the rear and 19x8 4.5"bs up front. The rears are mini tubbed but the frame is not notched. I think you have more room in the rear without touching it.

Yes, you can fit a 20x10 pretty easily on the back of those cars, we do it quite often. Front, either an 18, or even a 19. Personally, I like the 1" stagger better than the 2" stagger in diameter. Leave the 18/20 combos to the Tri-5 guys.

Not quite sure how to take that last comment,Jon.
      Besides,ARE doesn't offer a 19" TT II.

      In 1996 you had 18 and 20's TTII's?

I don't seem to recall those being out that long ago.

In 1996, I'd be hard pressed to find a car running 17's.

Take it as 18/20 combos look at home on Tri-5s, but not as much on chevelles. I think the 1" stagger is better for that body style. Not a bad thing at all, just what I think looks right on those cars.

I run 20x10.5 and 20x9 on my 71 monte. You should have atleast as much room as I do. I trimmed the rear fender lips but I have a good inch-inch and a half on the inside.

Here's a photo of my 68 Elky. I had just switched the fronts from from 17x8's to 18x8's. I've slept since then,Mark, but if I remember correctly the year was either 1996 or 97. 20" tires were pretty scarce back then and my 275/35/20 Michelin Pilots were $465 each!

Corvettes came with 17's in 1989 as standard equipment.

      I agree that a 1" stagger looks better,Jon. It's a shame that American Racing doesn't offer a 19" Torq Thrust.

The downside to 19" wheels & tires for me is their much higher cost.

my car has 20's and 18's livewires and i like it. i guess its just up to you on what you like.my rears are 20x10 and the tire difference in price and selection is what kept me from 19's

Here's another vote for a 1" stagger...unless the car is on bags and sits in the weeds,I think the 20" rears make the 18" fronts look too small...as weird as that may sound. The wheelwells on these cars are huge.

I had a 18/20 combo on my Chevelle and never was happy with the look.

thanks guys. Jilge71, i love the look of your car, that looks awesome! So if i was to go with the majority, sounds like a 19" wheel is a custom deal $$$ and I am limited as to sizes/tires(I'm VERY picky about which rubber I lay under my sled)

Keep the comments and pics coming

      Here's a 19/20 combo:

Plenty of options we can work out for you:
The front tire sizes could either be a 245/35/19, or Nittos new 245/40/19 in the NT05. Rear tire sizes could be 275/40/20, if in NT05. Or, we could run the 245/35/19 NT555 front, and the 305/35/20 NT555 R rear. If your car is going to sit down on the ground, then we can run 245/35/19, and 275/35/20s too. Lots of options out there. We've done them all too.... If we get smart about it, and really measure things closely, we might be able to get the 315/35/20 NT05 back there.

Wicked sick on the GTO. I need to go larger to get a decent tire on my 71. I vote for the 1" stagger too. 19/20's for sure
