starter, difference between manual or automatic?

what's the difference between a starter for an auto vs. a manual trans? is it how far out the bendix gear extends? or something else?
      thanks nick

I've used the same starter for both auto and manual trans, as long as the tooth count for the ring gear/flexplate is the same. If they're different diameters then the stock nose cone is different between the two (stock older GM starters), though most aftermarket starters have two sets of mounting holes to compensate for this also.

stagered bolt pattern and old 3 bolt cast nose use 168 large diameter flywheels, straight bolt pattern use smaller 153 tooth small diameter flywheel, and both 1 and 2 piece cranks had different mountings but the 2 diameters are used.
Me i always used larger diameter flywheels and then order a slim starter for a 94 K2500 4x4 350 or 454 AZ part number is DLG9990S.
These have performed excellently for most applications ,even with high compression.

thanks for the replies. i was hoping to find out there was a difference in "extension". mine sits too far back from the flexplate, so it only catches about 1/3 the width of the teeth. anyone have an idea on how to fix this? i don't know if the problem is due to the flexplate or the starter, so if anyone has measurements... the engine is a chevy 383 with a 168 flexplate and the crank is from S-O-M (mighty mouse kit) if that helps.
      thanks
