How would you build my LT1?

So some of you have seen my thread with my totaled Formula in it. If you have you know I've decided to use my LT1/T56 combo in the TA instead of going with a 6.6 LQ. What I was going for with the LQ and now want to go for with the LT1 is a very broad powerband with loads of torque everywhere. Well, building a strong NA LT1 is out of my budget range so I am thinking boosted. I would rather do a single turbo instead of a procharger because I can not stand the fact that the Procharger doesn't build boost until 3k rpm. When it comes in it hits hard to the wheels. I really only want mid 400s to 500 hp at the wheels with 400 ft lbs of torque plus. I'd like to start building boost around 2k rpm and have it all full boost by 3k. Redline will be as high as I can go. This will be a street car and I'm thinking I won't need more than 8 maybe 10lbs of boost at most.

So how would you build a budget turbo LT1? Are my goals pertaining to how the boost and power comes in obtainable or do I need to rethink all that? To keep it short, I want my LT1 to perform and build power like a stroked NA LQ4. How would you do it?

      Thanks
      Trey

I drove a customer car that was an LT1. 383 stroker, with a vortec on it, some afr heads, 6spd, etc...etc... Can't remember how much boost he was running, but it was good for low 10's and was very civil on the street when out of the boost. I know you said you're leaning turbo, but just another option...

If you are going to boost it I would just build a good 355 out of it, Use good crank, rods, pistons, port and polish the factory heads and you will make an semi easy 600hp on the boost.

A turbo won't make boost down low, most all turbo set ups build power above 3500.that why they call turbo lag

can I not size the turbo impeller smaller so that it spools sooner creating boost earlier?

The newer turbos are better at reducing turbo lag. Look for things like foil bearings and ceramic blades to reduce amount of inertia needed to get the turbo moving. There are also variable vane Turbos which work over a much broader range, but they're much more expensive.

Or you can run two small turbos.

You can size it a little smaller at the cost of efficiency at the upper end, but based on your goals that shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you size the turbo properly and match the camshaft.

Loyd Elliot makes a killer set of heads and I believe he does intakes too. Look him up and be prepared to spend a pretty penny for the top packages.

383/396 CI, The LE2 kit is a little small.

A set of LT4 heads that have the LE3 port is awsome.

I have a set of LT4 heads that are ported just about to the max, without welding. Im putting them on a 350CI for now, but will be going on a 396 when i step up my game.

I have talked to Llyod alot in the past 3 months about set ups.

are you sure? every high horsepower build I have seen from the LT world only makes top end power and is a drag combination. Got any links to dyno graphs by chance? I hate how CZ28.com does not have a dyno section like LS1tech does. It would be so useful to have that.

WS6, first of all to make good power, use good heads but keep the ports properly sized.
I have built several 355 sbc, making great torque using AFR 195 and AFR200, the GMPP LT4 HOT roller cam, comp stainless 1.65 roller rockers and keep it simple, you can even boost it if you want but this combo if properly setup can and will break 500hp and nearly 500lbft of torque.
Oh and for rotating assemblies I have been using Ohio Crankshaft for some of the rotating assemblies, super tough and decent prices.
I use this cam for several different engine combos as wit 1.5 rockers guys with trucks have some awesome torque production.
