      Electric cutouts. Rice or Muscle!!!!!!

I would like to know PT's members opinion on these mods.
I know some manufacturers had them as "gimmicks" from new in the 60's/70's.
I know racers need the extra 2-20hp they can give.
I also know people see them the same as a 1litre Eurobox or Japanese pocket rocket with a (possibly two) 5" rear tail pipe(s) and 1 1/4" thru pipes.

      Do we cutout cutouts??????????????????????????????????????????? ???

Cutouts are lame. I chirp all the old guys who spend five hundred dollars on electric, stainless, super gold plated cutouts. The money spent doesn't justify the 1-5hp a normal engine will see. And a well made and thought out exhaust will outperform the open headers that the cutouts are basicaly emulating.

X2! Not only that but a well designed system sounds better than open exhaust unless we're talking 15:1 compression race motors with monster overlap and a 1800 rpm idle. The guy who dumps his cut-outs when he gets to the show seems to have no idea that his 10:1 street motor sounds like a truck that lost a muffler.

For my situation I'm all for them. Having turbos it helps to quiet things down a lot. I LOVE the sound of turbos spooling up and after we installed the mufflers I lost that sound. Check out this clip starting at 1:10. This is without mufflers.

I HATE dump! Nothing sounds good with them. But I hate open headers too. I have always run mufflers on my drag cars!

I dunno I ran my 10:1 street motor on open headers and it sounded pretty mean to me! Certainly no dragster but still good.

Larry it sounds SICK. The turbos whistle giving it a different twist on just having exhaust rumble.
      I'm still undecided.
Research shows mufflers can give a few horses, enough to give equal ET's with or without the extra weight. (N/A). However on a boosted motor I'm not sure scavenging plays such a big part in removing gases.

Length of collector will affect torque and QTP recommend installing theer cut outs a good few inches from the collector. I've also heard you can determine this position by painting low temp paint along the collector. run the car and were the paint blisters is where you install the cutout. Any feed back welcome.

Got them anyway. Just got to fit and install switches and I can have the best of both worlds. Or keep them closed all the time if I don't like the sound!

My car had 1.75" coated Hedman hedders, 3" mandrel bend exhaust thru Dr Gas custom X-pipe and 3" Warlock mufflers into 2.5" tail pipes. On a chassis dyno, my 455 made 413 rwhp and 471 rwtq capped. Uncapping my Warlock mufflers netted 435 rwhp and 495 rwtq. Running capped was costing me 22 rwhp and 24 rwtq. I've since added 2.5" mufflers to tone down the car on the street so I'm sure the loss is a bit worse now. My electric cutouts give me back that power when I need it and they have the added benefit of scaring the crap out of the ricers/rap lovers who annoy me from time to time.

They are not cheap, but they can help your performance if you have a truly quiet car.

I have dougs headers electric cutouts on my chevelle and love them. It has a ysi the extra forced air of a supercharger makes the car super loud on a dyno. At the local car show and dyno i opened them up just on the dyno run everybody ran out of the building it was so extremely loud. People told me they could hear it all the way across town.

Its personally what each person likes. I like to open them when no one is around and I first start the car up the solid roller cam thumps hard.

Thats why this is such a cooool hobby so many different ideas and combinations. It would be boring if everyone was the same.

Let us know if you like your cutouts.

For those interested Pypes Exhaust has released their new cut out kit. I just picked up set for $279 and the quality is second to none! I think the sale ends 12/31

Brilliant sound, it now seems ultra quiet when they are closed. I think due to the Procharger boost and 1 7/8" headers they are extra loud.
Sounds like a cross between a Messerschmitt and a Monster truck above 4K. Hurts your ear drums and scares surrounding traffic when you open up in a tunnel. Loads of car alarms going off!!!!! I wonder if there are flames under the car?????
Lastly don't rev (bark) near cyclists in narrow streets you will cause them to crash.

They work wonders to remove rice and the 'gorillas in the trunk' of the guy next to you at traffic lights.

How fast do these cut-outs generally take to go from one position to another?

I always thought they would be cool if you put them inline with a pipe bypassing the muffler, but linked back into the exhaust system.

Rig them to open at anything beyond 3/4 throttle.

Definitely rice. If your exhaust system is put together correctly using the right parts, open exhausts arent necessary.

I agree they could be cool if set up like the Vacuum Operated Exhaust option on a 1970 GTO. When on it allowed the exhaust to bypass part of the mufflers reducing back pressure only when when you put your foot into it. When off it did nothing. So at idle, the switch in either position it sounds the same, the difference comes it when you stand on it!
