68 mustang rack and pinion options

Hi Folks

I have 68 mustang and fitted a power rack and pinion kit from Flaming River. I had custom header made to fit around this as can be seen in the picture. Now I had the car fired for the first time since 2004, and immediately the rack started leaking oil through the rubber gaitor, after speaking to Flaming River, it seems the rack isnt repairable and due to being out of warranty, they said i would need to buy another kit. Is there a rack i can buy of the shelf that would fit the cradle, current rack is fitted to the cradle using the supplied bellows. I just dont have the funds to buy another kit and was hoping there is another alternative that i can fit the the flaming river cradle. sorry for the long post. any advice will be appreciated. TIA

I'd get the measurements off that rack and check with Speedway Motors for a Mustang II rack. They're a common enough upgrade item for all makes and models that the design comes in multiple sizes now. As for Flaming River, if they sell disposable racks I'll cross them off my own list.

Those FR racks mount differently than the Mustang racks afaik. Check carefully.

I will send speedway measurements with pictures of the FR rack. hopefully they will have something. the fella working on my car is a brilliant fabricator and hopefully if i find something similar, he will be able to make it fit. Otherwise i will have to either get a Gateway rack and pinion or Borgeson PS. My only concern is the header clearance for both.

Just curious - why isn't everybody just using OEM-style Ford mounts on the retrofit kits? Why reinvent the wheel?

Proprietary. Means you must come back to them and them alone for more.

I'm guessing rack width differences would prevent people from using real stock racks.

The mounting method is functionally important. It needs to be very secure for safety. And it needs the right amount of rubber cushioning, not too little or too much.
