By now most of you have likely heard about the regulations that are suggested to be enforced limiting the construction of race cars using production street cars. There is plenty of discussion out there about it and should be easy to find. SEMA is all over it and yesterday enacted a petition to oppose this regulation. The petition has until March 10th to surpass 100,000 signatures. I signed it a few hours ago and since so has over 42,000 (!) other people.

I suspect it'll hit 100,000 by tonight, it's currently close to 85,000 since being published yesterday. It's nice to know there is such a large group of people that are willing to stand behind SEMA and others who are opposing this government regulation of our hobby. Not sure if the petition continues to collect sigs after 100K, but it would be nice to see 500,000, 750,000 or even 1,000,000 signatures by March 10th.

Go to this link and sign as well. This petition is backed by SEMA and is on the government's website so it's legit and your voice will be heard.

      SEMA petition

Speedtech STRONGLY stands behind SEMA's efforts in opposing this proposal and in keeping our hobby moving forward. We hope you do too.

you have to put in an email address then they send a confirmation email with a link that actually lets you sign. if you had multiple email addresses you could sign it several times.

Just took about 10 minutes to get the confirmation email. They must be getting bombarded.

Maybe this is known, and it will be used to discount the whole petition. And the proposed legislature moves forward.

F#%& it, I'm just going to buy a Prius and move into a condo.

My personal feeling is that the individuals probably don't matter, it's the response that gets the attention. If you had 10,000 signatures, well that would be easy for most groups to round up whether the cause is legit or not. But if you have 100K + signatures they have to understand that there is a significant interest in the issue and it's worth it to discuss for a few minutes in a meeting. The fact that although they allow 4 weeks to collect 100K and this one passed 100K in 2 days should have some weight too. Last I checked it was just shy of 150,000. Would be nice to see 500,000+.

I don't see how anyone could be so naive to think that racing and the old car hobby wasn't a major part of American culture. For whatever reason it doesn't get as heavily into the media like Football for example, but I'd imagine there are as many people participating in some way with old cars and racing on any given weekend than any sport or other form of entertainment. With that sort of backing and population I foresee a bit of a fight if this moves forward.

As I have said before, when issues like this come up numbers matter. The greater the numbers the more attention the issue gets. If you have not done so yet, sign the petition.

A quote from the SEMA newsletter I received today...

said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting- “Despite EPA’s statements that the agency does not intend to enforce the law against race car owners, the agency is, in fact, writing new law into the regulations. As a result, if this proposal is finalized, the racing community and parts makers would forevermore be operating outside of that law and could be targeted for enforcement at a future date. We don’t consider it an overreaction to try to prevent this new interpretation from becoming law.”

They say now they won't enforce it, but if it all passes they can legally at any time do so, in 10 years or next week. It doesn't matter to them, with this power they can shut down our hobby as we know it at any given moment.

Here's the full article from SEMA...

how convenient for them. no accountability, but all the authority. Its nice that we are held to the letter of the law, but its a complete free-for-all on their end.

Would love to see 500,000 before time's up, but maybe we'll at least hit 250K.

Folks, please spread the word to everyone you know about this issue. The EPA is not coming for your racecar. The EPA is coming for the aftermarket companies that make parts to turn your street car into a racecar. The implications of no parts availability is not too hard to figure out.
