      Impressive new product

      I have been on PT.com for almost 12 years. Other than talk about events, I have never really pushed any particular product, other than mention them if I have been impressed with something that I have used on my builds.
      I was introduced to something about a month ago that I have installed on my car and impressed with it enough to mention it here. Over the years, I have bought two other similar products and after buying them were less than impressed, found their monthly fees a bit too much, and eventually just stopped using them. When this product came to my attention, at first I blew it off, thinking it was just another version of the other ones. However, once I checked into it, sure enough, this one is different.
      It is a GPS/cellular based GPS tracking device for our cars.
      http://www.gnsperformance.com/#!skylink/cu6u
      Scot at GNS sells them, from what I understand is the only company in the country other than high end dealerships selling them currently and he is much cheaper than the dealerships.
      For $850 you get a device that will track your car from now on, period. The company offers lifetime tracking, an 800 number to call if your car is stolen and a recovery rate second to none, plus a $5000 insurance policy if your car is not recovered.
      Also, included in that price is a one year app where you can monitor your car, anytime, in real time as to its location. You can set Geo fences around it so if it moves, you get instant notifications, if someone is borrowing your car and goes over your preset speed limit, you know it instantly, and other features. If you decide after the first year you want to keep this feature, the cost will be about $5 a month, not the $40 or so fee monthly we paid for similar units ten years ago when several of us bought those units for 2006 power tour week.
      However, if you don't find the app something you need, then the basic, 24/7 tracking coverage is free for life. I challenge you to find that elsewhere!
      This is a very easy thing to install, simple registration and great security for our vehicles. We spend 10s of thousands of dollars on our hotrods building them and are sick when we hear about one getting stolen at a show or even from someone's home. This is an easy step to avoid that.
      Scot asked me to tell you guys about these and I am more than happy to do that. I have one on the charger and will add one to the cutlass when it is finished in about a month. I tracked the charger all the way to Syracuse and home last week and found it worked very well.
      If this is something that interest you, check out the link or give Scot a call, he has them in stock, ready to ship and you can have that same peace of mind before you go to another show or event. Mention to him you saw this on PT.com and get $50 off the price too for a limited time.

      Awesome, I too have been wanting something like this for a long time! What does it take? Some kind of brain box, and antenna? Basically just curious if it's something I should buy and integrate before I get the interior of my car done.

      So what happens if a car equipped with this system is parked inside a garage or loaded into an enclosed trailer where the GPS cannot acquire satellites?

      Mine works in my metal building, my garage and in my enclosed trailer. I need to put the car in a metal shipping container and check it there too.

      Must be an active transmitter rather than a passive antenna, cool beans!

      With as many cars stolen at these large car events recently ( 3 at the Woodward dream cruise along with trucks and trailers too ) you would think more people would like to protect their investments with a GPS vehicle tracking device that actually works as advertised, unlike the others on the market today.... To me it's a cheap investment to know your vehicle is safe!

      Why chance it?, why get that gut wrenching feeling when you come out and see your hot rod gone, your truck gone, your trailer gone, personal belongings gone.... That pain, anguish and hassle is worth it if you ask me.

      Just finished the install on our 1988 GTA. First impressions of the unit are all positive. Small and easy to install. Simple process to initialize the service and then load the mobile app. And the coverage map is impressive. Looks like if there is cell service, the device can be used to track the car which means virtually the entire US is covered. Other devices like LoJack don't even come close to that much coverage. Looking forward to sleeping a little better at out of town events knowing I can geofence the car once it gets parked.

      Do these have a battery back up? If so how long will it last?

      Unfortunately I've had a couple cars stolen over the years. My 68 Camaro was stolen in broad daylight with a big box truck. Witnesses (who didn't know it was being stolen) said a man went under the car where the battery was and cut the cables so the alarm never went off. My 66 Mustang was stolen while in my enclosed trailer when I was moving to a new state. The whole tow rig was stolen and there was no battery in the Mustang. luckily they weren't really after the car so I got most of it back. Lost all my tools and other belongings though.

      I always wonder about the privacy loss with stuff like this. The NSA will record pretty much anything they possibly can.

      So the witness' didn't think anything about a guy crawling under a car with big ass wire cutters?

      When i lived in Portland, on a day off I was in the living room reading a magazine or having a beer or something, and noticed a tow truck was hooking up to the neighbors car. Neighbor wasn't home. We called the cops. After another 2-3 minutes, the tow operators stopped work on the car, got into the cab and sat. Cops arrived, spoke w/ tow truck driver for 15 minutes, everybody one their radios, then they continued hookup and towed car. Turns out car was a non-starter, but in 1979 I'd never heard of someone having a tow pick up the car when no one was around

      Curious how this differs from the GPS Snitch system. It has been out for about 10 years but have not read about how well it worked in a stolen vehicle scenario.

      Hi John,

      Sorry to hear of your cars stolen.... Yes it has a battery back up that lasts 4 hrs.... These units also work with 16v systems for race cars....

      Pete, Glad you asked! (No comparison at all to me)

      Snitch

      * Cost $400.00

      * Monthly fee $25.00 x 12 = $300.00 each year you own it...

      * You have to literally plug there unit in and charge it for a period of 5 hrs every 5-7 days...

      * No Geo fences, No Quick fence, No speed alerts, No battery voltage info from your car...

      * You get 100 free location request credits with activation? (Wonder how much they charge you after that 100 for each time you want to locate your car?)

      * Warranty 1yr parts & labor

      I can see these charges adding up real quickly!

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Okay now lets compare SkyLink

      * Cost $800.00 (Yes it's more up front but less cost in the long run, Much less!)

      NOTE: Each unit we sell already comes with 1 year of ALL the bells and whistles AND it comes with the $5,000 warranty that is good for 5 years! We pre-paid for all that which is Included in that $800.00 price.

      * You can set your own GEO fences, Set a quick fence, Set speed alerts that inform you if your wife, kid's, friends speed in your car and it even shows you Where they did it, It even has a battery voltage alert if your battery is disconnected..

      * NO Monthly fee if you choose not to use all the bells & whistles, Meaning you still have Stolen Vehicle Recovery for as long as you own this unit!! - (How much is it With the bells & whistles you ask? For a 5 yr plan the monthly fee's come out to be like $5.00 per month) AND This unit is even transferable to other vehicles....

      * Included - The unit is a hard wire kit so no charging of anything!

      * Warranty - You receive $5,000 if your car is stolen within a 5 year period and not recovered within 30 days...

      * 4 hr battery back up vs the other only has a 7 day run time then it's dead in the water and has to be charged again for 5hrs!

      * When you buy the features your App is FREE and you can track your vehicle as many times as you want.

      * Even has a "History" where you can receive monthly, weekly print outs of your vehicles movement..

      * Unit is also compatible with 16v systems seen in many race cars...

      * SkyLink also has units completely water proof for Jetskis, Motorcycles, Boats, RV's, ATV's, UTV's ...

      * 98% Recovery Rate too! In the last 6mo. they recovered 190 vehicles with a worth of 3 million in assets..

      * Lower insurance rates...
