C5 conversion on 68' Camaro what booster/master?

I'm doing a complete C5 conversion on my 68' Camaro, and I'm going with vacuum assist. What are you first gen guys with C5 brakes using for a booster and master on this setup?

I like a 9" dual diaphram booster (or similar) with C3 corvette ( mid 70s) master cyl, and a disc/disc prop valve combo. I like the feel, the bias is excellent, and they dont lock up easily. I cant stand a touchy pedal and this setup work well for me. I am not running an adj prop valve. I only do autocross, so I cant comment on how this setup works for the open track. Best overall pad I have used is a raybestos high perf pad for C5. If you'd like the part #s just PM me. Enjoy the swap! Scott

I continued looking around and found the DSE Booster Assy. # 050101. Looking around the web, I now see quite a few guys using it with C5 and similar braking systems. I think it's quite similar to what you refer to, only newer. It appears "plug and pay" as well. My car will be a driver, if I ever finish it that is.

Now they use the "snap-on" style cap reservoir and a cast iron master cyl. I wonder why they changed the master cyl. on these units? I, like many prefer the "screw-on" cap for the master cly. reservoir, the snap style can be messy when removing, bleeding or adding fluid. I'll see what I can come up with..

I prefer the screw-on caps as well, so I usually opt for a right-hand drive, 2000-era 4-wheel disc S-truck master cylinder. This unit has the outlet ports on the fender side (RH drive...LH drive is opposite) and outlet ports that are conventional 1/2-20 and 9/16-18 versus ISO bubble flares like the C5/C6 units. If I had to guess, I'd say the castings are the same, just machined slightly differently and assembled with a similar, but different plastic reservoir.

Right on Tobin. I looked into the S-10 master cyl. as well. I read the master needs some massaging where it bolts-up to the booster to fit correctly .. I don't know how true that is. I understand the "bore" in the master on the S-10 it 5/16, which is appealing.

I finally did decided to go with building my own booster/master unit for my 68' Camaro. I built it based on a 2004 Corvette master cyl, and Right Stuff 9" dual diaphragm booster. I got the booster, master, lowering brackets and adjustable clevis kit , plus the prop-valve and a fluid level connector for less than the DSE booster assy. I got in a hurry and paid too much for the Prop valve, live and learn... I still made-out ok.

Here's a pic of what I ended up with for $ 374.00. I could have done it for about $325.00 or less, if I'd shopped around a bit more.



p.s. I'll manage with the "bubble flares"... not a deal breaker for me. I also preffer the C5 master cyl. reservoir as it is a bit lower than the S-10 unit.

Cool...looks like you got it sorted out. FWIW, the 2000-2003 S10 MC I mentioned above is not the 15/16" quick take-up unit with the snap-lock lid from the 80's/90's with the larger pilot register that needs to be machined, it actually looks almost identical to the C5 unit you pictured above, just with inverted flare outlet ports and a slightly taller reservoir.

What are you wiring the fluid level sensor into?

I'm splicing it into the original brake warning light circut at the distribution block/proportioning valve area. So the brake warning light on the dash will illuminate if the brake system experiences a significant pressure differential event or if the fluid in the reservoir gets too low.

I did the same thing you did but I went with a black power booster from tuffstuff and the S10 master tobin likes. A couple hours worth of research saved me a bunch of money and from everythign I can tell its the exact same thing. DSE wants over $400 bucks for the setup. As many C5/6 setups that are used around here.... I kicked around the idea to start ordering the stuff myself, assemble and sell it as a complete unit for $50 bucks less than they do.....haha

How did all this work out? Any issues? I did a similar setup with C6 booster and something is holding brake pressure but not consistently. Seems like booster is binding up or something. I'm going to get the booster like you have in you pictures.

Also, if you go with a C6 Master it's 12M x 1.0 inverted flare.
