      LS Swap headers

I have a cheap set of eBay headers I used on my '67 Camaro last year. I think the flanges are warped causing exhaust leaks, and I'm in the market for a new set of headers. I'd love to be in the $5-600 range.

I liked the idea of the new Hooker headers, but I'm not willing to swap out my almost new Holley oil pan (1st version) or my engine mounts/trans x-member. The Hooker/Holley stuff looks great, but they came out with it a year too late for me, so I'm looking at other brands.

I posted this on LS1tech as well...

Has anyone used the stainless steel LS headers from Texas speed in a 1st gen Camaro here? https://www.texas-speed.com/p-4273-t...1967-1969.aspx

Looking for pics of PS box clearance as well as how low they hang or how tight they tuck in relation to the subframe. Thanks.

FWIW, I have looked at the Dynatech headers I have heard they have great steering box clearance, but I have also heard they hang down too low.

I know Doug's makes a decent set of headers, and would be interested in seeing how those fit on a 1st gen if anyone has pics.

I'm open to other suggestions, but I'm not looking to pay a grand or more right now.

I have Dynatech headers, and they hang very low. I have Hotchkis 2" drop spring in front/1.5" drop leaves back, and the headers are 2.5" from the ground. I'm in the same boat as you are now. Hookers set up is nice, but then requires to change everything out.

Rodney (RodP) has a set of Sanderson shorties and it allowed him to tuck the exhaust up nice and tight. I'm eyeing that set right now.

I have the same suspension setup as you.

What type of frame and motor mounts are you using? Also, what is you transmission down angle currently? Thanks.

I'm using the DSE mounts recommended by Dynatech in the header instruction book (forgot the part number). My driveline angle is 3 degrees. Had the car up to 98 mph with no vibrations at all.

I can take a picture or two of the headers when I get home from work.

      Brent,

Here are some pictures of the ground clearance. I'll be very happy if I can gain 1 to 1.5" of additional clearance. Options I'm looking at are Sanderson or Hooker shorties, or Kooks/Stainless Works headers.

The tube routing is very similar to the Texas Speed headers you posted.

^^Ouch, those are low! Do you know how tall the DSE mounts are (i.e. what's the distance from the subframe crossmember to the engine)?

Not right on top of my head, but here's a picture. I'm guessing 1-1.5" from the picture?

I keep reading posts from people that saying the Dynatech headers have great ground clearance. They must have stock height suspension on their cars. I have to admit though that the headers do clear every thing else, other than I have to clearance the DS motor mount a bit as one of the tubes just barely touch.

street and performance mid length. You will gain a TON of clearance and will not be giving up that much power on the top end.

Stainless works fit great in my second gen, maybe a half inch below sub frame. They even included their own engine plates but they're a good chunk of change. They got great with 1 set back plates from car shop Inc

Thanks guys, but in trying to stick with long tubes.

I'm considering the Dynatech's or the Doug's right now.

Yeah, that's a crazy angle. Are the pipes supposed to go up through your floorboards?

The collector angle on any LS swap header is usually indicative of the engine inclination angle that was used during the prototype phase of the headers (in most cases the collectors will be positioned level with the chassis frame), which means if you want the collectors level to the frame you will have to set the inclination angle of your engine to the same position as that used by the header manufacturer. By the looks of the collector angle you have, it's than likely they set the angle of the engine to allow installation of a 4L60-4L75e transmission under the tunnel without requiring any sheet metal modifications. It will go in, but as you can see from the photo it requires you to run a steep inclination angle somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 degrees.

      67Rally,

I would recommend using Doug's #3337 headers with Dirty Dingo adjustable slider mounting plates, stock small block frame stands

I used them on my 68' with LS2 and T56 (using Speedtech/ ATS T56 crossmember) I ahve a Lee Mfg. Delphi 670 steering box and have great clearance aroung the box and ground / frame clearance

      Very happy with everything

      here are pics

Thanks. I hit you up for pics (by e-mail) a few weeks ago, and that's why the Doug's 3337's are high up on my list. How close is the #1 tube to the PS box. It looks close in that first pic, but it could just be the angle.

I have approx 1/8"-3/16" clearance, since I moved the engine as far back as possible with the adjustable mounts and not be right up against the firewall

      here is a pic
