      Possible impending tragedy.

I was walking home from visiting a relative, I turned down one of the streets and saw a pristine 1970 Cutlass Supreme Convertible.

When I say pristine I would say that if I didnt know any better I would say this car was bought off the showroom floor this morning, that type of pristine.

The paint does not look like a new paint job it looks like a pristine original paint job.

This is a white Cutlass convertible with Olds hubcaps.

This car is parked on a New York City street with no tags very near to a drive way in a slightly awkward position.

The possible impending tragedy is that NYC DMV states that any vehicle that has been left on the street with no tags for more than 24 hours can be considered abanonded.
NYCs law towards abandoned vehicles is that they must be dismantled for parts.

How can I possibly save this car from the scrap yard?

I will admit that I have been looking for a Cutlass of this vintage, not really interested in a convertible though but considering the pristine condition of this car if it were to go to
the scrap yard that would be catastrophic.

The car could very well have been left by the owner to be titled sometime in the coming week, all well and good.
But if not how does one go about trying to save this car from the scrap yard?

I would talk to the authorities before the 24 hours are up. Tell them you will store it and if someone comes to get it, fine, you'll relinquish it back to the rightful owners. But after the allotted time it would be yours. I would just try to state my case telling them that you really hate to see this car being destroyed. Might work, might not, but I think it's worth a try.

(edit) You might try the Mayor's office, or the Mayor's assistant's office before the Police. They might be a little more understanding. You'll also have to worry about getting a title to it then.

      Problem solved.

All I had to do was come back and start snapping pictures before the owner came out and asked if I had enough pictures.

I asked if it was for sale and it is for 12.5k.

In my defense I've seen this happen a few times in NYC but with cars with NJ plates.

An old car would sit for weeks/months before the car was hauled away.

I remember one time it was a 1980 Corvette Indy edition, car was very clean and original looking, it sat for months before it was flat bedded away.

That nice and for sale at that price?? I would've bought it on the spot if the paperwork was in order. You could always ship it to the next BJ and make a quick buck.

That's what I was thinking. I would buy it for sure.
I am not useless, I can still be used as a bad example!
