Most of the new Camaro show cars...I could take or leave. But that silver BASF one is sick sick sick. Totally schemed of the "Lorinser" S-Class look, but took it to another level. Looks like the designers played a little "Burn Out : Revenge/Dominator"

That first red Camaro is out there! Like I have always said, you can get away with anything when your racing, and generally beating the crap out out of your car. Its amazing how many variations of the same tire coverage there are. I'm going to sneek a Mustang in here. Ron

Now thats "Bad Ass" Just where the front bumper area is looks a bit.... like maybe something is missing. ( I just noticed the rear, are both front and rear bumpers removable, or are the brakets something else.

Well I will start off with my car. While some might not think it's a muscle car it has a great power to weight ratio depending on the engine. My Super Duty 4 cylinder makes 386hp but there are guys we LSX egines in Fieros all at around 2700-3000lbs cars. And not many times you can fit a 295 tire under a car this small.

What are the wheels on the Bob Sharp Datsun????

They are BBS mesh wheels with BBS wheel disks or wheel fans. They are there for brake cooling. If you go thru old IMSA footage or pics you will see that they are used at some tracks and not others sometimes on the rear and not the front the otherway around.

Some thing might be wrong with my taste but I think you could do something with this idea. Change the headlight area and down, like grafting in a 70 firebird nose, something, and you might have a looker. I would like to play with this car.

This car is from Austin, TX.. I have seen it around, the guy that built is originally owned a Import Shop and tried teh Muscle Car thing.. he didnt like it so he sold it to another guy here in towm who made it White with Blue Pearl and it started to fall apart.. Last time i saw it was at the Street Meet about 3 years Ago.. You think the outside was ugly, you should have seen the inside..

I really do like this car too, it brings back the best of memories. This car does look like every car in the neighborhood where I grew up. Flares, slots (or Cragers) setting way too high. All it really needs is an Easter egg paint job and it would be perfect. Kind of went hand and hand with the Gasser era in my opinion. Ron

J Bittle was my best buddy in college (Texas A&M). The legend and stories still live on to this day in the Texas A&M Sports Car Club... J had a 1967 Shelby GT500 with a Tunnel Port 427 and I had a 1965 Corvette Convertible with a 365hp/327 4-speed, 4.11 setup... :headbang:

I've blasted all around Southern California in that car... It was a blast!! :drive:

There was a guy living nearby me who had a widebody Manta A, set up with a Rover V8 in it. He told me it was the only one in the Netherlands that was licensed with a V8! I never found another in the Netherlands so he was probably right.

Always loved these cars, unfortunately never owned one.

saw this at san diego auto show, really cool looking but when you got up close you could see globs of bondo and fiberglass in the front wheel wells, and angle iron was sticking out where they formed the bumber off of. a car this wild you think they would go the extra step and clean up the wheel wells

There's a few, but they're one of the rare cars that retain or increase value with "correct" performance modifications so most have been modded in some way or another. The one above is fully race-prepped, ran the Silver State Classic a few times.

I'm looking for my old 88 GTA Trans Am CUSTOM WIDE BODY - White with tan cloth interior

Look at the link below for car photos.

Chuck Swick from Bond Motor Car Company in Columbus, Ohio bought the GTA from me in 12/1989.

Last Registered in Minnesota in 1999 based on ****** records.

Custom Wide Body GTA Trans Am that I built in 1988 Glen Mills, PA. I sold the GTA at a Kruse Custom Auto Auction in Miami, Florida to Chuck Swick from Bond Motor Car Company in 12/1989, he took the car back to his home in Columbus, Ohio and he used it personaly. Chuck sold the car at his dealership in Ohio a year or so later. I have contacted Chuck and he is trying to find the information on who he sold GTA to. Last Registered in Minnesota in 1999 based on ****** records. I have not found records past 1999.

Let me know if anyone has seen it. I may be interested in buying it back.

There used to be a red TA in Birmingham, AL with a similar body kit/flares. That car looked great and I have tried to find a kit for years but I assume that the company that produced them are long gone.

Have always loved that 240Z! Thing looks totally badass!! The small headlight detail is super sweet too. What body kit is that? All the other cars are pretty cool too...especially that Escort.

One small gripe, just sorta related to this thread, but are projects getting a like/dislike vote based on who is building them? Seems like ideas that have been shot down before when someone unknown does them get praise when someone famous does them. Speaking specifically about the Mustangs open hood showing the ITB...not that I don't like them, I think they're great! But never hear people mention how good they look on other peoples cars.

Alright...back to the awesome widebodies!

Theres a page out on the interweb someplace of a guy that did the same thing with a Morris minor or something like that...the build was insane! He did an all new chassis and verything and you couldn't tell the car was too different, asides from the wheels, except when you looked at it head on or from the back. Cool sleeper!

This is a 1977 Mercury Capri ghia , the last year that was imported from Germany. It was to be my baby until raising our grand daughter and the economy ground it to a halt.I have been working on it off and on for four years and just don't have the time to finish it.I have invested $20,000.00 into it (actual $ ) not counting hundreds of hours of love and sweat.

The basics---351W 340hp(NEW), super duty T5 5 speed(NEW), 7.5" built rear end 3.73 gears,Detriot locker true trac,Yukon axles .Mustang II front suspension(NEW),4 wheel 11" vented disc brakes(NEW), 6 point roll cage(NEW),racing seats(NEW),Halibrand Cobra III wheels(NEW),BFG G-Force Sport tires(NEW).The left side is nearly finished ,the right side 1/2 to 3/4 . Body has been widened 6" in the rear(All steel). With a little time and effort this could easily be an award winning show car .I had intended it to be a very nice driver.Every part put on it has been new or completely rebuilt .I can supply a more detailed parts list and cost on request. This my seam like allot, but even if you scrap the body and use the rest you are still money ahead.

The Capri II's were very popular road race cars back in the day and had quie a cult following here as well. I had a couple myself. There was a great company called ROK Stock (Richard O Kaiser I think was the guys name) that did all kinds of Pro Touring stuff for them, in the 70's 7 80's before we had a name for it. Here is Klaus Ludwig's Zakspeed built Wurth sponsored car.

This is my new LS V8 Porsche 914 project. Plans are for an aluminum 5.3 LS truck engine to replace the 4 banger. Since the 5.3 weighs almost exactly the same as the 4 banger the car should still handle very well.

Another "Flared" project that I will never get to but I just bought the car anyway. The car has the body mods I wanted which are "Steel" flares, slant nose and Fuchs wheels.

Whatch you talkin bout Willis?
A 914/4 complete weighs about 265 lbs. An Aluminum LS series complete with flywheel weighs right at 497.
Looks to be almost twice as heavy!

vintageracer

I was told the VW engine was much heavier and a 5.3 wieighed about 430lbs with alternator and A/C compressor. Water pump will be electric remote.

There will certainly be additional weight due to water in the front.

Z06killinSBF
06-17-2010, 04:23 PM
I think the weight would be an added bonus being over the rear wheels with that much power. Not sure where the battery is but move it up front and maybe add a few pounds bias. You only need to offset half the weight gained correct? I always loved those Porsches. Good luck!!

Its funny, I've got a 70 Cuda body setting here that I plan on doing the Trans Am treatment to. I plan on bulging it some, but no where near as extreme as my Mustang. Why wouldn't you continue the front fender width on to the back fender in the area of the doors? Wouldn't you save some drag in wind resistance/turbulence?

Rhino
11-22-2010, 05:40 PM
Totally uneducated guess, but two reasons I could think of would be that the doors would be non-functional, and the 1/4 openings could then be used for brake ducting and diff coolers.

Bjkadron
11-22-2010, 06:12 PM
If I remember correctly, most series required the stock doors and roof to try to limit things. As you can see, it didn't work out well. Also the side panels create downforce, and they commonly ran radiators in the back, if rules permitted, to get better balance.

jp455
11-23-2010, 02:43 AM
Ill confirm that Benjamin...the doors had to be stock, and they did put radiators and/or oil coolers in the back. If you look at 935 Porsches youll see that the doors, roof and windshiled are all stock 911 and everything else is tube frame/composite.

A few reasons. If I remember the rules stated that the doors had to be stock shape. Fenders were an open area for wider tires. Also if you notice the rear for the front fenders allows the air from under the fender and hood out.

No idea about bolt ons for a 2nd gen. But something I always considered was that if you were ok with something like the Capri above you could simply weld on fenders and quarters to the existing body just further out. Basically just moving everything except the doors out.

The outer lip is made of flat steel(3/4 wide x0,150 thick),and the rest is 1mm steel plate.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/02/0084-2.jpg

Removed all the steel,to make room for tires and wheels..its one thing to make flares...and another thing to make use of them.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/02/0057-1.jpg

Inner wheel wells where widened too.

these are some build pictures on our first muscle car build by LPZ
572 custom engine dyno'ed @ 763hp and 750# tq on pump gas
the wide body is an all metal wide body
2.5" stretch at the rear and 1" at front
rocker panels are also stretched to match up body lines
rear wheels are 24x15 intro billets and fronts are 22x9
its a big body car so we just went BIG on everything 443734437444375443764437744378

Looks really cool.

11 pages of awesome flared fenders & widebodies, and NOT 1 '70-'72 GM A-Body (Chevelle/GS/GTO/442/etc)?

Maybe I will be the first, then, when it's done...
a rendering would be cool to see the concept, but there's nothing like seeing the finished result in real life!

Don't be a hater; I've had the vision for customized GS's since the '80s, and made quite a few of my own sketches/drawings (like my custom GSX stretch limo, GSX with Lamborghini doors, Ford GT style Midengine 455 GSX, etc.).

As a fellow GM A-body owner, I'm with you, not against you!

You may have the 1st widebody Chevelle, and I may not introduce the 1st widebody GS, but I may end up having the only widebody GS that no one else will be able to copy (unless they want to buy the parts from me, as I'll make them available as add-on ground effects)!

Oops, I just overlooked LPZ's post here, but that's not as widebody as I expect my GS should be.

I LIKE IT, though!

No, I'm not, honestly!
You have more skills than I do, for bodywork, as I can see; I just have a different idea for mine, to use a "double" 1/4 panel to make it wider, then to remove the "inner" 1/4, and add a wider wheel well/tub/outer 1/4 support, and also support it with a lower extended rocker panel.

If you understand my idea here, and even if you decide to try it before I do, I still wouldn't criticize your work, rather I'd appreciate your efforts from my inspiration.

I admire your Chevelle, as it is, and hope to see others like it, in other forms (GTO/442/GS...), as well!

How about a '69 Corvette with Rivet-on flares? I believe they are made to L-88 dimensions so they're not very radical.

What about a 356? Found a couple pictures from vintage speedsters. Would be pretty cool with some more "pro-touring" styled wheels and a healthy engine.
