here is the 86 Camaro i just got. i don't know how "pro touring" it will ever be, but it drives nice and that V6 sgould be fairly easy on gas. one of my cousins might have a complete IROC body kit laying around that i can get for cheap to make it look somewhat fast. i had to tear the interior out to get al lthe mouse nests out, but i think it cleaned up pretty nicely. i just need to find/make me some black door panels..

yeah, but i can bet the IROC stuff cheap, and i know that people a lot smarter than me GM spent a lot of time using really expensive wind tunnels and what not to make it actually work..
besides, i really don't like the look of the splitters on the Cup cars. the new Nationwide cars are pretty smooth looking, tho.

Well, before you look at the pictures, just know that I chose my words rather carefully. When you see it there is no denying that it is "radical," and "astonishing." In fact there was much more of a crowd around this third gen than my Camaro at the show. Oh and if you happen to like it, the owner/creator/builder saved the molds so that people could replicate the car on their own Camaro/Firebird convertible.

This is why you don't see too many of these yet. The parts alone in this car would have cost much more than 5K and you see the asking price. That car is a bargain.

Getting closer to putting "Project Snowball" on the road. We don't advertise this 89 Formula as a Pro-touring build in GM High Tech Performance, but I think it's safe to say it's a PT car.

The photo is from the May 2010 article in GM High Tech Performance where the Formula gets Baer 6S brakes, Toyo R888's, and Budnik GTX's

John, great to see articles of Project Snowball, and I would say it definitely fits the PT mold. I actually just re-subscribed to GM High Tech Peformance after being away from it for awhile because it seemed like it was going away from third-gens, but it is definitely back with the third-gens and it's great to see!

I made some progress on mine and finished my buddies 92 GTA (apart from it needing bigger brakes, these stock things are a disgrace).

Mine, some exhaust work and some more engine compartment stuff and radiator setup all done. All pulleys done, custom flat belt drive system and more.

Steve Rupp put a couple of pix of a very serious Rad Rides by Troy third gen build in the most recent Camaro Performers. Extremely cool and an idea whose time has definitely come. (LOVE the 5th gen tail lights!) Meanwhile, it was a beautiful day in Northern California yesterday so I took my '89 IROC out for a ride. A thirtysomething guy at a stoplight wanted to know if it was for sale and a very elderly lady in an SUV gave me a long look and a thumbs up as I went by. Hang on third genners! Nope, not for a Gen 1 SBC. A set of Hooker long-tubes and lowering springs leaves you with about 2" of ground clearance. There's no good way to run true duals either. The best solution is to run a single 4" system. The exhaust routing is the biggest issue I have with these cars.

the most i've ever spent for a new set of headers was $225 or so for a set of jet Hot coated Dynomax headers about 12 years ago, so anything more than that is a fortune.
i can't believe that there aren't any good cheap long tubes out there- it is a car that they made 1.5 million of over a 10 year period...
if i can't buy a set of cheap long tubes that don't drag on the ground, then i'll find a set of used shorties and make then into long tubes- maybe even tri-Y's or something weird like that.
of course, then i'd have to snake the exhaust over the rear end and past the panhard bar mount on that side of the car, but that might not be too bad..
i'm not scared of reworking the floor to run a tube down the driver's side- i could tie into the home made subframe connectors i'm dreaming of and use a different trans crossmember/torque arm mount to tie the car together better. that's another thing i want to do- get the torque arm mount off the trans tailshaft.. what the hell was that all about? that would make running different transmissions easier..

why all the trouble? why not? i've never heard a V8 with single exhaust that sounded right- but i do, however, love the sound of a high strung small block with an X pipe and Flowmaster mufflers. that, and it looks stupid as hell having the exhaust run over under the passenger footwell like that..

Hooker # 2138, full lengths that are bent to follow the same route as the stock Y pipe. I don't know if they offer a Y pipe for it but they're full length. Dr. side sweeps in front of oil pan, pass side sweeps alongside and then outboard like the original pipe.

Duals are possible but space is tight and if lowered a serious diameter will not fit. I managed to cram dual 2.75" pipes under, they run along the pass side and cross over under the TQ arm mount and exit on the drivers side.

The pics where I have it finished didn't come out right (damn camera, the lens shutter stuck so half of the pics was dark)

It would need to be a pretty flat oval, but it could work. I'm planning to run true duals on my third gen in the near future but for now, I'm in the planning and research phase. I've purchased a pair of Hooker shorties (2460) and I'm trying to figure the best route to the back. I plan on using 2.5" tubing with Magnaflow 4" bullets. I planned modifications to the upper support bar and the panhard bar which isn't a big deal, but the ground clearance is a problem. I'd like to run one side down the drivers side tranny tunnel but it's very close in proximity to the gas/vent lines. I thought of wrapping the lines in heat shielding to temper the problem. After all, they did mount the factory muffler under the gas tank. I think I could get it over the axle without coming into contact with the panhard bar. Thoughts?

Stainless oval tubing is impossible to get here and burns is mighty expensive, add shipping and it's downright insane. That's the reason I fabricate my own oval tubing. I was going to use it but ended up not doing it. This is a section of how I fabbed it:

Look at the floor pan where the pipes run out the side for your answer.

i see that, but besides being the loudest place to put it, that is going to be the most likely spot to bottom out on things like speed bumps- almost exactly half way between the tires. put the exit back in front of the passenger side tire, and it allows you to run the pipes in next to the driveshaft in the stock location to tuck them up a little bit, and the tips will be less likely to bottom out when they are closer to the tire.

again, good work and all that, but from a practical standpoint that's about the worst place to exit the car.

It's not the most likely to bottom out because I tucked it as high as possible. The tranny pan is lower and yes it occasionally bottoms out.

I tried to make it to the pass side rear tire but there's no room to fir 2 2.75" pipes next and under the driveshaft.

This way the pipes are tucked up as high as possible, I've built ore than a few exhaust systems, I know what works and what doesn't. This should work, and if it doesn't I can always change it.

Went to the Fred Gibbs Memorial Car Show in Illinois last weekend, little late on pics. On the way up, the fuel pump went out on my Camaro about two hours from my dad's place. I was able to get it changed the next day and still made it to the car show. It's the only car show I go to and it's a chance to hang out with my dad. I ended up winning a class award. Threw some pics from the thirdgen section in as well.

Those Recaros are awesome. I would go with the Recaros, not just for aesthetic reasons, but the support will be much better than the factory seats. Look forward to seeing more man.

The IROC has Jamex lowering springs, along with 100lbs of stereo equipment in the trunk. :) I think the rear springs have about had it, but I've got a spare set that's ready to go in next time I've got the car in the air.

The IROC has Jamex lowering springs, along with 100lbs of stereo equipment in the trunk. :) I think the rear springs have about had it, but I've got a spare set that's ready to go in next time I've got the car in the air.

Nice looking car.......first time I heard of Jamex springs though so I will have to check them out. Stance means everything as far as I'm concerned! That car was rough! Good job! :)

They just fit perfect and I might go that direction on my IROC. While I'd love to have Fiske's for it, that budget isn't here for this car.


Thanks Tony. The wheels are SLP ZR1 "type" wheels in 17x8 made for third-gens, so no spacers needed. They are not actually ZR1 factory wheels. Tires are BFGs 245-45 up front and 255-45 out back. I'm planning on swapping coil springs again in December to get little more lower, probably about another inch, and adding tubular a-arms up front. Eventually, I want to swap wheels and go with some Forgelines or Rushforths.

Now for some new wheels (not posting which ones, prev. wheels were copied, I want something that no one else has on one of these cars as far as I know) and paint.

Because I'm always waiting on parts I decided to start on my 82 trans am to soup it up too.

Here it is, only lowered on stock 15s w/ a lowly 2bbl TBI equipped L98 vette short block w/ L98 iron F body heads. It's pathetic

The car is completely stripped down as far as interior, suspension & drivetrain goes. Everything is going back on either flat black (engine compartment & engine components) or semi gloss black (suspension) powdercoated. May even invest in some tubular arms and k member just for additional clearance. However, some of the items I've seen had mig welds that look just ok at best and the powdercoating covers up a lot.

I'm thinking about some large gold center BBS wheels for it. It's getting the same baer brakes as the camaro (I have a spare set so that's cheap) and I'm going to build a new engine for it, possibly something 400+ ci SBC based. I got some nifty Duggan heads that I may slap on w/ IDA throttle bodies directly on the heads (that's what they're set up for) otherwise it'll be regular SBC heads w/ either 1-3/4 lemons full length headers or 1-7/8 Hedman Hustlers (have both)

I'm not 100% sure what to do w/ the rear susp. There's a juink 10 bolt non posi w/ drums in there now. I do have a complete C4 D44 IRS lying around but I also have a lot of C3 components left, althoigh heavier the C4 Eaton diff would not have a batwing to mount it, easier to fab up a custom crossmember. I also have a complete Guldstrand 5 bar for one, I'll have to do some measuements to see if possibly it fits. I didn't want to cut the car up, it's 100% rust free but some idiot already cut an access hole for the fuel pump, cut and modified the area where the fuel filler neck goes through (fixed that, I think it's part of a dealer tank recall that was done, a way to save time) and there were some other brackets and crap welded on here and there. I removed it all and fixed the areas but now that it's been welded on nothing is keeping me from getting into it.

Yeah I always thought it was cool how the t/s housings "sunk" into the nose. The front spoiler looks early I.R.O.C. style... kinda flat... I like it. I would really like to see what this thing looks like with its monster hood on there... :git:

Just got Eibach sportlines and Spohn front tubular control arms installed. I already had Hotchkis coilsprings, but wanted a lower stance. The Eibachs actually ride just as good if not better than the Hotchkis coilsprings. I've had it couple times since the install and the handling and ride quality is awesome. I'm very happy with the results.

I had a 71 before early second gen were cool, wish I never sold it. Been into 3rd gens for years, and have always been made fun of for them being the 'mullet gens'.

It's going on 2012 for the new model year and the 3rd gens are out of the gate for being over 30 years old. The restrictions of the 30 year rule at most venues won't stop the 82's from getting in and making their mark.

In most racers eyes the front struts will never be as good as LSA suspensions but the fact that 3rd gens have been awesome at autox events for years will get the attention of many who are on the fence.

The aerodynamics of 3rd gens can't be beat by many cars and that alone will always put them in a place to be recond with.

Oh how getting older opens up more possibilities for the the younger generations or does it? LOL.

I was towing a car for one of my employee's friends a couple days ago, and spotted a black 1989 Camaro RS convertible, sitting up on ramps. It has some body damage (front fender, bumper cover, hood, and a couple dents in 1 1/4 that could be pulled out), the top is shot (but works), and the TBI 305 has a stuck lifter acccording to the current owner....but its factory black on black, has a 5 speed in it, and he's asking $1200. Its been sitting up for a few years, though, and I'm betting $800 cash would take it.

You can find running 3rd gens for the same money, maybe not convertables but running. For the money it would take to get that dented and broke car going you could by anything you want in a 3rd gen and go driving as soon as the plates go on. I have seen 17,000 mile cars go for $7,500 so don't waste your money on a bucket of bolts because it sounds cheap.

For someone who can't do the work themselves, I'd agree, but I could have this car running and driving, with new paint, interior, and top for less than $3500 (including labor costs). Finding a running third gen for cheap is pretty easy...but a convertible with a manual trans? Nope.

It has been my experience with convertibles that you will probably have trouble finding the floor in it (as in "rotted out"). Especially one that has a damaged roof.

Hi everyone, I stumbled accross this thread and board......I was impress with the 3rd gen love......its sometimes hard to find!

Ill post my Camaro LT, which is my first car and currently my daily driver.......
Some quick facts, it was 1 of only about 800 LTs made, and the guy before me swapped the v6 with a IROC-Z 305 TPI and IROC-Z suspension parts. It is pretty much stock with a MSD ignition, a slight tune, posi with 3.73 gear ratio, Transmission Specialties 700R4-2000 stall converter, and finally lowering springs....

Right now I am in college and can't really do to the car what I want due to money restraints, the fact it is a daily driver, and limited time. I hope in the future when I get out of college and hopefully(:banghead:) get a job I can make the thing into the auto-x car I want it to be!

Thanks for the complement......I don't see too many sport coupe cars anymore, let along LTs, I mainly just see the RS, Z28, and Irocs. I love the SC/LT body style, it is almost refreshing to see something different. Surprisingly for how many miles are on it, it is very reliable daily driver. Even though the little 305 in it doesn't make much power, will keep going on forever if I guess keep up with the oil changes, which I do.

I also just checked out your car Brandon, and it is very nicely done! The paint is absolutely stunning, is it pearlescent paint?

Yeah the SC, Berlinettas, and LT's are rarely played with especially when it comes to taking a corner. I would love to get my hands on a clean one to play with while I daily drive it.

I was lucky with mine I found it on ebay, the guy who had it before me was moving to Arizona in two weeks and he had to get rid of the car pronto, so he was asking 2,250 bucks, my dad took me up, we looked it over, and I got it. Not only was it very cheap for what was but I also got a bunch of goodies like stock rims with snow/ice tires, and misc. spare parts(gauges, interior parts, etc). The paint job was done in 2000 and has since taken a downhill spiral. Multiple places have surface rust now, clear coat is chipping in a few spots and a very large keymark down the front fender to the mirror(happened before I got it). That may be the next investment in the car after power windows if I can save up my money enough.

I special ordered my WS6 in the spring of 83, today it's almost all original, has a little over 62,000 miles and a 406 (I still have the original 305 and bowling ball wheels) and I've lowered it an inch and a half. They are cheaply built, but can be badass with some good parts and some $$.

I actually bought the 91 for $1000 about 6 years ago. It ran then but the trans was slipping bad. Was going to make a bracket racer out of it, but never got around to doing anything with it. May just fix it up a bit (trans, and interior) and drive it until the youngest is out of college then fix it up.

Thanks guys, they are not really gold in person, but have a satin lip and black/gray spokes.
I have thought about mixing up some of the copper penny pearl I did my stripes in with some clear and giving the wheels a light coat.

I'm not sure...part of me says that black centers with a color matching orange on the lips would be cool.....trendy, but cool. When that trend wears off, you could always switch it up again.

I think that color matching wheels is trend that will pass like everything. I really like it on some cars, but thinking now, the cars that I like it on had a Nuetral color paint (black, grey, white, silvers etc.). I think that it will probably turn out good. I was looking into using vinyl wrap on the lips of my wheels as a temporary change to see if I like the look of a satin black lip on my wheels... Might be a low cost, non permenant option for changing the lips of your wheels too?

I put my old dirttrack engine in the car and ripped the tranny to shreads on the inside. I put over a grand worth of parsts in the rebuild now the rearend is going. I have a friend who wants to trade me a 74 nova for it and it seems like a good swap I hope.

You could give it away! LMAO! I'm guessing before you started dropping race engines, and thousands of dollars of parsts in the car you didn't research any of the basic know weak areas of these cars. I think if you had, you might have a little better taste in your mouth for the third gens, or at least known to put your money in another dirt car.

100% agree with the last two posts! Anyone who has ever owned a well built 3rd gen and driven it on the track knows just how well they handle (which is VERY good BTW). I have owned 3rd gens since the late 80's and have only had one that I would consider a bad one (it had been hit really hard and not repaired correctly).

I like to take the hillbilly/redneck connotation and cram it down peoples throat when they see my car in person. It's fun to hear some of the comments my car gets at shows.....typical response is "I usually don't like 3rd gens but this car is B.A."...lol

That is pretty much the exact response I get too! I get so many thumbs up and stuff driving it around. I think that just about everyone has a special spot for these cars in their heart, usually a fond memory of some sort.

I think the best comment mine ever got was at a dyno day where someone said "That thing sounds like it's going to eat that baby" as a friend covered their infant son's ears. The sound of a cog driven blower also never fails to attract a crowd at the local show whenever it gets started. Discrete is not a word that can be used to describe the car.

I was thinking of gutting the interior painting it white welding in a roll cage. Putting a small Chevy in it with a thumper cam, adding a cowl hood a better bumper cover making a NASCAR style rear spoiler powder coating wheels I got off Craigslist yellow painting it blue and yellow like a Sunoco race car. What you thing ok or cheesy

Otherwise it might as well be a 3.8l Monte Carlo with a #3 on the side type of racecar... Cheesy. From what it sounds like budget is the constraint... What would you sagest for drive train and suspension.

So it all depends on budget... but if its tight...
Suspension: I would go find a G92 Iroc/Z28, or WS6 bird in a wrecking yard and steal springs, wonder-bar, sway bars, and steering gear box. The cars have decent suspension from the get go. I would add an aftermarket shock/strut combo... Koni's if you got the coin, or KYB Agx works ok too. Now If I was rolling an SC... I would hack 1.5 coils off the front springs and 3/4 spring in the rear to drop it close to 2" upfront. If you can find a disc brake rear end with 3.42 or 3.45BW rear I would also swap that. Spend the money for sub-frame connectors!!!
Drivetrain: Sounds like you already have a decent small block. Don't get crazy with it, but try and get a WC T5 to make it fun banging your own gears. If you run into a deal on one I would recommend a T56, but most of time that will take a chunk out the budget. If it were me... LQ9 with a pair of whirrly mufflers shifter through a T56 to a S60 rear end... dreams :)

Well as of today Im the proud owner of my third 3rd gen, but my first IROC. Its missing a motor but the heads, intake, and runners (Edelbrock) are all sitting in the back of the car. Its an auto car with a recent rebuild. Also has some suspension goodies installed, just not to sure what and what kind. First thing on the do do list is make the already pretty straight body even straighter. Being that the motor is out Im going to do a complete color change and since I like to be different from the norm so Im going to mix up a custom white pearl and paint the car white. Not that I dont like blue, red, or black I just want to stand out, theres not many white IROCs out there. Undecided on an accent color just yet, was thinking of mixing up a silver pearl with a clear basecoat but I think Im just going to match the grey IROC sticker on the door with the wheels and louvers on the hood. Future plans if finances allow would be a LSx/T56 swap.

I wont get it at my house until this weekend but here is a few pics of it at the old owners house when I went to look at it.

I have a thirdgen that I race in SCCA C-Prepared in Atlanta. I have some weight jackers, lowered springs and currently run 16 inch Real Racing wheels. I want to look into some 17 in the pro-touring style, but I don't want to break the bank.

I would love to show up at some pro-touring events and be hella fast on the autocross, but I want to select the right wheels to start with.

Does anybody here have some 17 wheels for 3rd gen that they wouldn't mind selling me? I don't care if they need some work / repair or paint.
17x9.5 preferred, but could go 17x10 if available -- actually just let me know what you have.

Oh, and before anybody says it -- yeah, i know the hood needs to be painted. I want to lay some flat black down, but have been too busy and the hood just went on 3 days before that event.

I use a latch link 3 inch wide lap belt. The factory 3 point belt didn't hold me in place very well and I would slide around. I use the 3 point belt when driving to and from the events though.

I rarely even see them on the road anymore. I would love to find a solid IROC-Z Coupe 350 standard that needed some TLC, even a roller with a solid body. I love the looks and even in factory trim I felt like they stuck to the road pretty good.
