I've got one. Just turned 80,000 miles on a trip to kentucky. Future plans call for wheels, and all the drivetrain from my S-10 (gm 330 HO, 6 speed). Will probably put in a tubular K-member when I motor swap. Brakes from an LS1, and SFC's. Hopefully get started on the mods this winter. Till then driving the wheels off of it.

This thing is bone stock, down to the exhaust manifolds and air pump. I took me over a year to find a near rust free car that hadn't been torn up or abused, I think that is the main reason that there are not that many around. Fox body's are a dime a dozen, much harder to find one of these.

94, hell that was an 84. rust got the best of it. I saved all the pricey bits, and parted all the s-10 specific stuff.

next time I go home I'll snap some pics of it sitting in the junkyard.

Mine is pretty much finished under the skin, and the exterior is saved for last, the new body panels are attached and the paint comes when I have saved enough cash. Don't worry, I don't drive it much like this, so I consider it a project, and not white trash :)

They can't get past the mullet stigma.

I have my 88 iroc drag car, and my 92 is a daily driver. It is a 305 5 speed, but I am doing suspension mods to it, while keeping it stock looking.

Love them myself, trying to convince the misses in getting one for herself for a driver.

Between my wife and I, we have owned 3 third gens (1987 IROC-Z 305 TPI-5 speed, 1989 Turbo Trans Am, 1985 Sport Coupe) Below are pictures of her car (which she bought 14 years ago and we resurrected last summer). I'm beginning a brake upgrade on the front this weekend. It is is getting 13" C5 rotors and calipers. My friends in college teased me after I bought my IROC-Z. They told me that the only thing I was missing was a mullet and a switch blade in my sock. :)

Brian I like the look! Since you have to paint the front spoiler anyway, update to 91 -92, and maybe try and shave of the "air vents" for pre- 91 side look, with the more aggressive front?

Thanks, I was thinking about changing out the front spoiler too, but in the interest of money we are gonna keep it all 90 (since this is a budget project for my fiance and I). The Hood is actually the stock 90 louvered hood that we cut up to make functional. Wanted something different. It should help cool the engine compartment in the hot summers he we have here lol

The car looks great...
But I really can't consider the 3rd gen F-Body or the Fox Body Mustang for that matter to be pro touring cars.
Factory F/I, factory overdriver transmissions, factory 4-wheel discbrakes with ABS.

Again the cars can be very cool (I had one), but you have to draw the pro-touring line somewhere.

Thoughts??

So my 17 year old car that I have upgraded the engine, trans, brakes, suspension, interior, and exterior isn't considered a
"pro-touring car"? I thought the point of pro-touring was to make an older car a better performing by using newer technology.

I absolutely consider my car both a street fighter and a pro-touring car. We all can't afford to have 69 camaros or mustang fastbacks.

Thoughts??

I can agree to an extent... Most "pro-touring" cars are much older and having to over come some challenges that the 3rd gens did not (fuel injection and overdrive). In the case of the third gen the benefits that are listed as reasons "we" do not fit the criteria, don't count in my view as the Factory F.I. is inadequate for making what is an average HP numbers around here. Neither of the overdrive transmissions will hold up to any additional power. 4 wheel disc is optional on some Z28/IROCS, and still when equipped, you get 10" discs! (69 Z28 = 4 wheel disc). Some of us still had to convert from drums. ABS was not available at all, and not like any one else around here is out running to install ABS on their 1st gen.

Basically, even though we got some improved parts for being a newer car. Those parts are still have to be upgraded and replaced as almost everyone else is having to do to get the handling and performance that they expect from a "pro-touring" vehicle.

But still, nobody ever walks up to my car and says "I like the pro- touring style you got going" Oh well :)

Well...let's put it like this.

My 88 has received a modified 350TPI engine with a 700R4, better brakes via upgraded discs and a Ford 8.8 rear for more strength. I have racing seats and Corbeau harnesses, AutoMeter gauges, aluminum radiator, modified suspension....many of the things that most of the members have done here.

My 88 happens to also be a Jeep YJ but I doubt you would consider it a Pro Touring rig.

My point is that your IROC/Z28/Camaro, etc will probably get around a race track faster than a stock 68 Camaro because it has better brakes/suspension from the factory and except for a few examples just about as much power.

I think Pro Touring is more about bringing old iron up to modern specs. Now....having said that, comparing a 92 Camaro to a 09 Vette might be the same but the origination of Pro Touring was and I think still is, geared towards older 60's and 70's vehicles.

I'm seriously tempted in building a Gen 3 car. Quite frankly, as much as I love the 70-73 stuff I'm tired of looking at outrageously expensive rust buckets as a starting point.

The IROC from the first post is a very good example. I want something that is hop in and drive across Texas dependable and will still blur your vision when angered.

And maybe it's old age getting to me, a high school nostalgia thing but when I was in school in the mid 80's and the Gen 3's had come out most of us either had or knew buddies that drove Gen 2 F bodies so we were tainted. I had a 78 TA and sure didn't like the Gen 3 Firebirds, still don't but I'll be damned if the IROC aren't making me look twice now.

Maybe a real nasty black on black LS6 IROC with all of the goodies?

The car looks pretty cool. I don't care for the rear deck lid extension, but thats just me. Why did he put so much work into the front fenders pie cutting and making wider, when the wheels he chose don't come close to utilizing the space?

Overall. There is a lot of cool bracing and metal work I would love to adapt into my build someday... NICE CAR!

Zee

I had an 84 Z28 L69, 5 speed with rear disc and no T-tops. Overall a good car but if you wanna know why they are not more popular it is simple. The chassis is flimsy, as is the rear end, as is the trans. The only thing weaker than the brakes is the HP rating of most of the engines and as soon as you start making power, that which was working...breaks. There is no way to put a real exhaust under the car and have any kind of ground clearance and just try and replace one of the in tank pumps. After people broke just about every part they could trying to break out of the 14 sec. zone.......People did then, what they do now...buy a Mustang or restomod vintage iron.

I don't want to sound like a hater. If you are committed to putting in a HD rear end, trans, cooling system, fuel system, higher capacity brakes and major league chassis stiffining before making any kind of real power, then by all means, have at it. The cars are relatively light and still look pretty handsome after all this time.

Why is it that they all look pretty cool in these pics, but every time I see one in person I just shake my head? Perhaps it's because they're usually being driven by mullet headed rednecks in faded black hair metal t-shirts? Could be...

BTW, after looking at all these pics, the biggest styling tragedy for these cars must be a cowl hood... not at all complimentary to the car's lines.

My issue with those cars is the strut suspensions, and the narrow wheelbase combined with a 192" length. They're 7" shorter in the wheelbase than a first and second gen, but 6" longer in length.

Just found this thread a couple of days ago. I'm on my third 3rd gen. I have always liked their looks more than I disliked the whole mullet/hair metal thing. IMO the best looking Camaro of all time is the split bumper 2nd gen, then the 3rd, the 1st, (can't hang with the chopped off front end) the 5th and the 4th. Just my taste. As far as the performance and handling weaknesses are concerned; that's why we have DSE, Global West, Wilwood, etc., etc., etc. Hopefully the 3rds will get more respect as time passes. In my town, virtually every time I take my '89 IROC out for a spin, some thirtysomething guy at a stop light offers to buy it. The best was a guy who said: "It sounds angry!" Thank you Chevrolet and Flowmaster!:camaro:

heres my 89 third gen I picked up for $3500 a month ago....

had a 87 since 1990 but it needed alot of work to get it back on the road.....this thing came up....almost identical to my old one, 305 tpi, 5 spd, 4 whl disc....put my good "one line" (thirdgen speak) 87 wheels on it new tires, new brakes and an O2 sensor and Im rollin'....buffed up the faded paint got the car professionally detailed and steam cleaned to get the stench out....feels really good....sold my other one in a heartbeat, the guy is going to put an LS1 and 6spd in it

let all my fiends go for a drive in it.....then the "no respect" third gen has plenty of respect when they get back, they love it, nothing like a clean running torquey v8 and a slick shifting 5spd.....I tell them to find an open stretch of road get to 1500 rpm in 4th and floor it to redline and hold on while the tpi pulls cleanly from 15mph to over 100.

I want to make a "GT'/mild track day car out of this one, frame connectors, aftermarket track bar, lower control arms, Koni's, GOOD stereo, some nice sport seats.....something I wouldnt hesitate to hop in and in a moments notice and drive cross country with the A/C on....at this point I got like 5gs in the car

As an owner of a 3rd gen, my perspective is that the biggest issue with spending money on these cars is that, no matter what you spend on it, when it comes time to sell nobody wants to pay more than $4-6K on the finished product. REALLY nice cars or 1LEs go for maybe $8-10K.

As an owner of a 3rd gen, my perspective is that the biggest issue with spending money on these cars is that, no matter what you spend on it, when it comes time to sell nobody wants to pay more than $4-6K on the finished product. REALLY nice cars or 1LEs go for maybe $8-10K.

x2, I have $9800 tied up in drive train stuff. All the spohn suspension you can toss at a 3rdgen. etc... Tried to get rid of the car back in Norfolk. Nothing. few well its only a $3k 3rdgen.

Ya it needs paint. Thats the last thing I was doing. 92 25th Anniv. droptop. listed in sig....... Said screw it had it shipped to Fl. with me. Keeping it will paint it this next year.

Miss my 85 TA also.

Cant really answer that question. I drove to NJ and bought the vert as a rolling chassis. and put all the suspension stuff on it. Then the 383, etc..

Right now its just on cut ws6 springs. while I await a global west weight jack setup.

If your thinking of suspension the best thing to do 1st is Good tires and Shocks/struts

It adds up quick. very very quick , my swap was just gona be an intake....... and then its not even done yet but have gotten most done. wheels/tires/bear brakes full suspension, sound syteme, interor is coming with paint. new weather strippin. hood and almost everything under the hood. probly the best thing to do is make a list of what your goals are and what you want and stick to it .

Wow Im really suprised at how I constantly see in this thread people saying they dont see any 3rd gens here.. As for pro touring cars I think 3rd gens are a ideal car.. All the talk there not old enough bs is jus a bunch of bs from people who are to narrow minded because of how deep there pockets are and how cheap 80's can be had for.. growing up I had tons of these cars.. I owned about 8 of them.. I havent owned one now for about 8 years and recently had a ich to start looking for another.. I was thinking how nice it would be to own a super clean vert to tool around in.... Maybe grow a mullet out if the army will let me..If not maybe switch it up to a flat top. Anywho.. These cars can be made to preform on a serious level they can handle like a dream with jus a lil bit of work.. POST UP MORE PICS!

The rear end is a borg warner 9 bolt but they didn't just come in GTAs, up to 89 all L98s (5.7s) got those, camaro's & firebirds. 90 up got the 10 bolt again.

The intake is not an arizona speed and marine unit, it's also not a ramport, it's a GM manifold. It's a rough sand cast w/ a winters foundry snowflake on it. I don't know what it is exactly, it's supposedly a prototype intake. See the rough snowflake?

Here is my new to me 1991 Camaro RS 305 TPI 5 Speed.

Nevada Highway Patrol B4C Camaro. 1 of only 2 known/found. Total usage between 15-20 cars.

Here is how it looks now:

http://www.fototime.com/inv/75A168536F4DE34

It should look good when repainted the factory 2 tone Blue with Silver roof, NVHP markings and and small Aero Lightbar.

Here is what the car will look like when completed. The car in this picture is other known 3rd gen 1991 NVHP B4C Camaro.

After all, there must be something out there to chase all the PT cars around the track!

There are probably more still out there somewhere but the owner's may not know what they really have.

The B4C option was the police option code that included most but not quite all of the 1LE race option AND you also got air conditioning which was not available on the 1LE cars. One thing the B4C cars did not have was the aluminum driveshaft that was on the 1LE cars. All the 5 speed cars had 305 engines. The 350 cars all had automatics. A little over 1/2 of the 492 B4C Camaro's made in 1991 were 5 Speed. I bought this car because of the 2 tone Nevada colors which I think are nice and the 5 speed transmission. If the car was a 350 automatic car I would not have bought it! Another bonus was that the car was a DIRT CHEAP Craigslist score. I paid more in shipping cost to ship the car from Las Vegas to Tennessee than I paid for the car!

1991 was the first year for B4C Police Package option on the Camaro.

By the way, as bad as the car looks in the pictures it runs and drives great! The car was complete when I got the car. I have already started the disassembly as was shown in some of the pictures.

You're half right. The front is entirely different. The rear, is the same. The control arms, shocks, springs, panhard bar and torque arm are interchangeable. This is why when you order aftermarket suspension for them- they are listed as 1982-2002.

wow!....you pretty much threw the handling book at it.....how did you like it when it was all done??.....what made the biggest difference??......did the sub f c's get rid of the rattles??......did you have a tubular K member?

I had the following components:

overall:

eibach springs (1" lower)
wilwood 4 piston disc brakes/ rotors
welded in subframe connectors
braided steel brake lines and PBR fluid
Toyo RA1 tires

(front)
kyb struts
spohn strut caps
bmr shock tower brace
hellwig sway bar (I forget the dimensions, but it was big)
PST polygraphite super front end kit

(rear)
edelbrock panhard bar
edelbrock torque arm
tubular lca
3:73 posi rear (later added a richmond power trax after I wore out the stock posi unit. the powertrax actually hurt the handling though. lesson learned)

On the street, this thing had almost no body roll. It was probably too stiff for safe street driving as I noticed on more than one occasion it would bounce around rough road curves.

I took it to Willow Springs for an open track day, and it yawed like a 70's Cadillac. That goes to show how much more forces are on a car at a track. It was very humbling for what I had thought was a great handling car.

They all helped, as did the LS1/ 6 speed. However, to answer your question- I'd say the single biggest improvement was the Toyo RA1 tires.

Granted, they're DOT track tires, but they gripped like no other tire I've ever ridden on. I could panic stop on the 405 with my wilwoods, with the braided lines and not lock the tires up.

Yes, I loved it, and I'll do something similar to my '67 Firebird I'm building, taking what I've learned and trying to improve upon that with a better combination of parts.

You realize when you drop your panhard mount your going to want to stiffen up your rear rate, unless youre grossly over sprung as is, correct? Chances are if you go much stiffer rate wise you'll want better dampers than what KYB offers.

Which brakes does that bracket allow you to mount on the front spindle? $50 isn't bad - that's what I paid for a set I got from a local guy who had access to a laser cutting machine.

Depends on how you plan on building the car are you looking for a legit Iroc or just a clone as the the body parts interchange from 82-92. Earlier cars tend to be lighter.

Heres a thread I made a while back referencing weights..

Thanks, looks like I am going to start looking for an '87 RS, car will be stripped and used for road racing and track days. Pobly shoot for NASA TTSU specs.

slowcamaro

Well chances are an earlier car would be lighter than the 87, it just so happens that he had the information for his car. Note there aren't a lot of v6 cars posted from the earllier years. Note that the 82 firebird is pretty damn light and it has a v8. I think a base 82 camaro is likely just as light.

But realistically, if you want a car to race, the best thing to do is watch the CMC and SCCA boards. There are some killer deals that come up on american sedan cars and the like.

I know part of the fun is building your own, but no one says you can't start your build from a proven race car.

Chances are you'll save a little weight starting from a 82-84 chassis, but if youre stripping it down. I'd just grab whatever you find in good shape, they're almost free.

Gitter Dun
03-25-2010, 02:24 PM
Yeah, I've seen CMC cars going for $8000, definitely a good start, and yeah, the Firebirds are definitely alot lighter but I will go Chevy, old school 383 stroker, M-22 trans, and independent rear suspension, Thats the plan.

I don't think the firebird are always lighter, I was just stating that the early cars tend to be lighter as they likely added subtle chassis modifications thru the production run

Getting closer to putting "Project Snowball" on the road. We don't advertise this 89 Formula as a Pro-touring build in GM High Tech Performance, but I think it's safe to say it's a PT car.

Yeah, the 82 is still in the same state, haven't touched it. The 77 is done apart from putting the hood on and doing some final tweaks here and there.

77:

There's an old threads here for both of them, the 77 has the latest update. the 82...oh, not since a couple of years. Problem is, I have an 82 Trans Am coming in and I also have an 86 Monte Carlo on the way and I can;t just leave well enough alone.

I see some pro touring potential in this... it has a E4ME Q jet 305 now....hmmm, that's not good.

Just curious for you third gen guys. Has anybody used a tubular K-member? I was thinking about picking up a third gen and doing an LSX swap. The tubular K-members for these cars are pretty cheap, but I don't know how much of an improvement they would be over stock other than weight savings. Seems like you could put a couple of grand into all the suspension upgrades, do some C5/C6 brakes and an LSX and have an extremely capable autocrosser for 10K if you don't do paint and body. Am I missing something?

There have been numerous threads on this over at thirdgen.org From what I remember reading the tubular cross members aren't much lighter, but what they do provide is more space under the car. more space for headers, turbo ,etc. Also, you can have a rack and pinion steering set up, too.

Just do your research before you buy. not all of them on the market are really designed for street use.

Again, from what I remember reading. I was looking into this when I had my '84 T/A with LS1 engine.

I hope this helps.

There isnt a k-member on the market for the 3rd gen which i would use in an autocross or roadrace application. UMI offers(offered) a roadrace version for 4th gen cars, You may be able to see if they are able to engineer an upgraded version for thirdgens, but the demand isnt really there.

Here is a nice one selling for a fraction of the build cost:

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/camaros-sale/579672-87-chevy-camaro-iroc.html

Staying with the 305 was an interesting choice given the level of mods to this car.

Interestingly enough, this is the car that started the thread. It is a nicely done example and I think it is cool that he stayed with the 305 but is making a ton of power.

97 is a fourth gen. Irocs were 3rd gen cars.

It "might" have had Z28 suspension.

It would have been a 3.4L.

here is the 86 Camaro i just got. i don't know how "pro touring" it will ever be, but it drives nice and that V6 should be fairly easy on gas. one of my cousins might have a complete IROC body kit laying around that i can get for cheap to make it look somewhat fast. i had to tear the interior out to get all the mouse nests out, but i think it cleaned up pretty nicely. i just need to find/make me some black door panels..
