European magazine? You mean you don't have every PHR issue on that build in chronological order, signed by Stielow and Cameron, all neatly packaged in a presentation case? I thought I knew you..You're not as anal as I gave you credit for being..Scat crank and rods..damn Pro Tour R/T..and you're blasting me with Callies and Eagle..You sound like a intelligent, knowledgeable car guy..but your statement about seizing an engine and slinging a rod beong two totally different things. You show me one engine that seizes, or 99% seizes at over 7,000RPM and 170 mph or so due to oil starvation to the bearings, and doesn't spit the rods out of it, then I'll show you a thousand that did. These rods were so hot that they turned blue..looked like you had a torch on them...Eagle rods made a believer out of me..Indy was amazed it didn't sling a rod too. I didn't use Scat's crank..It was too heavy and Indy doesn't use it..I'll bet they will have it lighter and stronger in the near future though..Don't discount the Chinese..We'll all be buying tons of their stuff in the future. Everyone's technology is going over there and they will be making lots of excellent products in the near future.

Bob...Don't drag me into this... The Mule was a 525hp engine. A Chevy steel crank would have worked. I have a hard time finding my left and right shoes that I took off the night before.

Charlie have you ever seen the 30's Rolls Royce that Al Wiseman in Tarpon Springs, Fla. has..It has one of those big Rolls airplane engines in it. I was at the Leake Auction in Tulsa when he bought it..It fired up in that big old building when they ran it across the block..straight exhaust..wow..what a sound..fit right in that big ol long as* hood too..super quality piece..like those Bentleys that sold at Barrett Jackson in Fla a few weeks back. You should have bought one of those..They were absolutely worth the money.

I talked to The Real last night..he looks like he'll make Year One Experience. That hillbilly has Eagle Rods in his TT aluminum big block Camaro too. Guess he has no taste like me..he's had good luck with them too.. While discussing the oiling problem with Missle, Steve said the Keith Black block is worse than the Indy block for oil retention in the top end. Learned a long time ago. Opinions are like As* holes. Everybody has em, and most of em stink..I did talk to Rabbit about the TT Viper @ Maxton. He said it was bad as*. Said he had a bad as* Korean girlfriend there too..

Don't take my opinion as badgering, and the eagle stuff very well may be good enough for what you want to do. My thought was that such a high caliber car, where it's apparent no cost was spared, you would spend the extra $500 to bypass the "good enough" for the best there is. And gain the peace of mind when you're running 200+
And yeah the KB block (stock) does retain a bit of oil up top. But that is easily cured by an experienced engine builder. I would rather fix that than have to deal with the horrid porosity i've experienced in the past from Indy products. Having a set of heads weep coolant through the castings and up around the valve springs/rockers etc. is abolutely unacceptable. Maybe they have fixed the quality? maybe eagle has as well. I personally like to use things that I never have to second guess.
And it looks like a couple vipers will be coming to the year one event :smoke: no they won't be "full on road race cars" but will probably have a nice set of brakes, sticky tires, and a lowly 700ish rwhp. There are a couple cars doing one lap of america. If you can get that magnificent 1hp/ci monster to stay together for 4k miles that would be a fun test bed. :ssst:

Bob what type of oil scavenge lines were you using and what did you move to ?
As mentioned I"ve been running -12 standard braided line from Summit, most likely Aeroquip or Earl's. I haven't had a problem so far, but I'd like to move to hard line in the new build for space and durability reasons.
So - what did you replace your scavenge lines with to avoid collapse ?

I won't have time to get in my 4k miles in before the show.. lol I'll barely have it back together..won't have time to carry it back to redyno it by each cylinder now that we made provisions for pyrometers in each cylinder. I guess you read what kind of rods were originally in the mule that you said Stielow wouldn't dare have a lowly rod like a Eagle in...And he also had a scat crank in it. This engine was Indy's design. As I've said, they have good luck with the Eagle Rods. I can't complain about them since they held on with no oil to the bearings. I've got friends that have had good luck with them too. No need in spending more money if the product serves your purpose. You going to be there..or just sending big brother over..700+ rear wheel hp is all anyone can use on that track..

Earls had furnished nylon covered lines..We had Earls change everything to braided stainless..same sizes as before..added the suction line in the intake valley to evacuate the oil from there..added 2 more qts capacity..that nylon was way too soft..maybe it wasn't the problem, but I'm not going to risk it. I want to get my 4K miles in before those rods turn loose and the coolant starts weeping out of the block and heads..lol

Small turbos, I was told, and somewhere in the 800s hp. Any more power probably wouldn't be useful on a road course. I imagine there are healthy weight savings. The owner seems to purpose build some wild stuff just for the One Lap. Did I mention it is a Viper Competition Coupe?
There is another member of this board who knows a lot more about it than I do, maybe he will chime in.
ProStreet R/T
04-18-2006, 11:23 AM
A TT SBC Comp Coupe? wow, thats an interesting build. There is a big CI CC (57x ci) with a pair of turbos being built, but never heard about the SBC.
How is he going to do one lap in that? The CC isn't exactly street legal. And DC has gone to great lengths to prevent people from converting them.
Do you know which spec CC he used? They have different versions for the world challange, SGT, Viperdays etc.
The swap seems down right silly. If he only wants 800hp a viper V10 will do that N/A. The long block should only give up maybe 50lbs to an aluminum SBC, but that would be lost with the turbos.

Bob, why don't you use hard lines for your oil feed and just a short flex line next to the motor? That way there will be absolutely no chance of colapsing anything. Also like I said I would run the oil pump with a drill to check the tank level when the pump is pumping at full capacity.

The oil pump drives off a cam gear. don't know how to spin the pump w/o the cam and rest of engine turning with it..The braided stainless lines shouldn't collapse. I would have like to use the kevlar lines, but we didn't have the time to get all of them made up and Alan didn't have the tools to put the fittings on them..Alan had to adjust the length of the lines when we went braided stainless. The flexibility of the 2 lines made for a little different length. We would have had to adjust the length a little for the Kevlar also. Alan just didn't feel comfortable with the hard line. even with the two big motor plates, he felt the flexible line would work better.

Engine is back in..didn't have time to get it to the dyno to set it up..we're going to have to change the driveshaft to a lighter unit..CenterForce modified the clutch..it's shifting some better..but it seems that we have too much inertia with 2 10.5"discs, and the steel driveshaft. I am feeling the gears good until I spin it up..then the sinchros just aren't able to overcome all the inertia. Running pretty decent..I wanted to get it out on the track, but Alan just got the engine in the day before and didn't have time to put a lap top on it and get Young Performance to check the settings..We're carrying it back up there late this week or early next week. I drove it Sunday morning with Greg (Alans Painter) Alan was still in the sack. We probably went about 65 miles..got it up to 1&* or so..never felt a car as solid/smooth/stable etc. It goes around curves like it's on rails..ride quality is absolutely unbelievable..and that exhaust note..just ask anyone who was behind me leaving Miltons..made me forget the day before..

Alan hasn't had time to get the Cuda back to Young's to get it dynoed. I've got to go get it and have it in Atlanta by Monday to have it in a photo shoot for Mother's Wax. They're renting a studio and a bunch of fancy cameras and equipment, bringing a photographer in from California (Drake Morton) and Ken Holland from Mother's Wax will be on hand to do the shoot. Alan called Young's and put a laptop on the Cuda and has it pretty close. I'm going to run it some more before I take it back to get it dynoed.

We are going to change clutches in the Cuda..anyone tried the dual disc 8" Mcleod clutch with the light Pressure Plate and Aluminum Flywheel? It weighs a scant 20#'s complete. I want to see how it works on the street. I know it's quick release but supposedly not off/on like a light switch. We are also looking at Spec, Exidy,Tilton,..as you know the Cuda is street driven and competes some too. need something that works well in both areas.

Bob you just listed the last clutch you'll ever buy. Tilton! Talk to Kurt over at Tilton and make sure to get the 7.25" Carbon/Carbon. I've run one in the Supra for a few years now at over 800rwhp and it will take any abuse you can throw at it. Plus it's so light and easy to drive you SERIOUSLY will never use another clutch!!! When I took it out of the box I thought a Formula 1 team sent me their setup! I slept with it that night... ;) My setup weighed 19lbs total including the release bearing. As you see below in the pics the flywheel is solid, they have another that is half the weight but's harder to drive.

dual 12" discs? Damn they all said the Cuda would have been fine with a single 11" but the flywheel wouldn't fit in the can with a starter ring on it. Why would you need dual 12"s...If you've got room for a 12, a single should hold it fine..Alloway blew the Mcleod out right off the bat but he didn't have it adjusted right ( on the black Challenger)not sure what brand Terzich had in the Starliner but it blew right out. The Centerforce lasted pretty good in the Cuda, Felt great, but I'm not sure all that inertia wasn't hurting my shifting. how did Prodigy shift with those dual !2's..Did you ever power shift it or wind it real tight and shift it fast?

Great input, and timely. I have been worried about this part of the Satellite we're doing, it's not as serious as the other cars listed here (guessing ~ 700 HP at the crank), but I'd prefer to only do this once. Big heavy car, good amount of torque is a recipe, well, you know.. Never ran a dual disc, but it seems like this is the best setup these days. Any maintenance issues, etc? I'm sure it won't be cheap, but if it works right the first time, it's worth it. I recently put a Tilton Hyd. throwout in the Camaro, pedal effort isn't as light as I thought, but man that little sucker disengages fast, very little pedal travel needed. Tilton makes very, very nice stuff.

Mark,
The only maintenance you have is to replace the "spacer" disk once you have worn the carbon driven disks down .025". You have to pull the clutch pack out of the car and dissamble to replace it. But I'm still running on the first spacer and have .019 to go until I replace! I would guess on a street driven car that is abused regularly. You would be replacing the spacer every 3-4 yrs or so.
If you need a hook up on price let me know. The setup isn't cheap usually around $4k for the flywheel, clutch, spacers, hydraulic release bearing, etc.

I have ran the McLeod dual disc for years. I believe mine would be dual 10" discs. Its a good street clutch, the effort is a little heavy, it like any heavy duty clutch, but not excessively so, and it holds my 700 rwhp all day long in a 3600 lb car.
Mine also will smell like burning clutch if you slip it off hte line a lot or when you are goofing around backing up and slipping it. I've never worn one out yet though, but I'm not putting thousands of stop and go miles on it.
I never really noticed the burning smell until I went to a 3:00 gear in the back, and I have to slip it a little more, before I cuold just drive around on/off'ing it very easily with no slip. It is really only noticeable when you are waiting in an uphill line for stop sign.
I've always wondered if those carbon/carbon clutches could makeup the difference between the small normal racing clutch discs which will not last nor drive on the street.
But even though you have now confirmed that it does work well for street driving, that's just too damn much money !

I've been in Columbus at the Mopar Nats. Had to go to Detroit to look at a company I'm going to buy and pick up the extra carbon fiber front end I had built in case of a tragedy. Rich Chenet shot the Cuda for a European broker that sells photos and articles to magazines worldwide. Rich is really fast. he did the whole shoot in an afternoon. We probably started shooting at 3:30 and he got finished. We did some of the shoot at the Airport. He had this Camera with a monster lens that looked like a rocket launcher. Rich kinda has that mid eastern look about him too. I called the airport security to have them come out..Him standing out there pointing that thing would have looked pretty scary to someone that didn't know what it was. Josh with Buckaroo is at Alan's shooting the Cuda today. I've got to get back on the clutch deal today. I'd buy the Tilton but they don't have a flywheel and they don't have time to make one..clutch won't do me any good without a flywheel. It's really what I need but I'll have to settle on something else.

I've had numerous people accuse us of copying Chrysler's CUDA, dubbed a Challenger..Fact is, my car was at the Nov 05 SEMA Show cosmetically complete, though not running. It won a Chrysler design award!!! First photos that I'm aware of on their CHALLENGER/Cuda, was in Jan 06..There are some similarities..but is it by chance or did someone copy someone else? It's obvious we surely didn't copy them..doesn't really matter to me..if they did, it should make Chris Itoh proud to think that a whole design team would think enough of his work to use it as a guide. Do we get to see any pics of the cuda set-up for the 0-200-0 before sema?
Oh... Come on Bob....
We all know that you “compelled" a Ford design engineer to leave the company, and take a job at Chrysler just to get you "early" pre production photos of the new Challenger.
Very crafty of you.
From what I understand, Josh Johnson (no relation, or is he...) left Ford in the summer of 92. As we can see your evil plan had been in the works for years. And to make sure that his trail was covered, he took a job as a Wal-Mart greeter for 3 years. After which Josh fell off the map and did not reappear until the fall of 04 at a Wabaunsee Middle School job fair where he negotiated himself an interview with the original Challenger design team.
The rest is automotive history.
Deny it if you can… :-)
On another topic....
How is post "Street Machine of the Year" life treating you? Still getting calls from all the groupies? Everyone calling asking you to bring the Cuda to their event? People offering up their first born just for a ride around the block?
In any event, I hope you are enjoying the fruit of all your long hard efforts. Hopefully, next time I see you, now that all the pressure is off, you will be in a more relaxed state of mind.

Life is treating me better than I deserve. Are you going to Putnam Park for Air Rides deal in a couple of weeks? Great track to check your car out..I'm going but i'm very nervous about it..Scott Pruitt is going to be there and wants to put the Cuda thru it's paces. I have to be in Pigeon Forge 1 day after Putnam Park for The Shades of The Past Show. They've opened it to 1972 this year. Thank goodness they're having early and late car of the year. I'd hate to go up against Dale Boesch's 38 Chev. We'll be back at SEMA...probably PRI again too...

I know.... We ran out of Splenda in the office and I had to use sugar. Note to self... Lay off the sugar!!!!
Thanks for the heads up. I don't get Car Craft. I will have to check it out.

Glad to hear things are going well.
As far as the Air Rides thingy, this is the first I heard of it. In a couple of weeks??? If it is the first weekend of Sept, I will probably be at the MCA 30th annaversary show.
It looks like we will be in the MagnaFlow display at SEMA. Right at the entrance to the "Overhaulin" display.
Wayne is just returning from the Woodward Dream Cruise. We were in the Ford "Team Mustang" display.
If we don't make it to the Air Ride event, it looks like we might run into each other at SEMA. If we do, I would like to take you out for diner. Call it a "day late and Dollar short" celibration for the winner of SMOTY as well as a thank you for your hospitality when Wayne and his daughter were down in your neck of the woods.

I was going to wait until Marty Mcguire (Cyborg TT)and his friends and builders at Revolution Industries (Adam and Ian) www.rev-in.com got all the site up but I guess I'll jump in and say I just can't believe what they've done and how fast they've done it. All of this was done in about a week. I had looked on Marty's site www.sportmachines.com and saw a multitude of Cuda pix. I ask him who sent them to him..he had just scrounged them wherever he could find them. I ask if I sent him some more if he would post them. He said he would do one better, he would just set me up my own site. Viola..here it is..can't believe it was this painless and fast. I can't thank them enough for their fine work. I recommend them highly.. Everytime I had worked on a site with some other guys it was a long tedious frustrating ordeal..Thanks again....damn Howell...I thought you wanted this thread to die ...

Sometime back you mentioned that you guys used a Weldon pump on the car do you know what design or model it is and where is it mounted internally or externally, I looked through the pictures and didn't see the fuel delivery system. Who did the finish on the center of the wheels and what's it called
I like the cooling system it cleans it up nicely. Bill this thread is still alive.

we did use a Weldon Pump...I was told that it was the only one that would live..It was external...I've got spare one at the showroom..maybe I can remember to post the # of it.. All the coatings everyone refers to is fromAlan's Paint Wizard Greg Chalcraft..better known on here as customcarpainter...the valvecovers, firewall, wheels etc are all painted..they just look like something that's been coated...yes the 2 electric pumps and the lines run thru the chassis really clean up the looks of the front of the engine
