I just got back, I will post some good pics of it later tonight. I would have to say, that was the BEST protouirng/showtouring car I have EVER seen. Every single aspect of the car was amazing, here is a list of things i learned/noticed about it;
900+horse without nitrous
all aluminum HEMI
6,000+ hours(8 months full time build)
1.5(or something) chopped roof, stock windshield, lexan rear glass
AME full frame, with C5 front suspension, and C5 Transaxle!!
Full Carbon Fiber front clip, fenders hood, inner fenders
CF inserts on top of door
devil brakes (weigh about 10 ilbs per corner, titanium rotors etc...
5" ground clearance
Has PPG paint
EVERY SINGLE part of this car was custom, and was all top notch craftsmanship, highly functional also. About the only thing that i ddin't find fuctional was the 20+" size wheels on the back. Many custom one off machined pieces all over the car. This thing plain blew "sickfish" back into the water! The guy answering all of the questions was their painter, and was real nice and helpful. I host some pics in a minute

That is amazing considering how low the thing looks. They must have really channeled over that AME chassis.

Alloway's Challenger has one of our frames under it as well. Bobby mounted the body so the pinch weld on the rocker was level with the lower edge of the chassis. The roof sits at 47" and he still has 4" of ground clearence.

Don't forget that Alan's car is both chopped and sectioned and the front end has been lengthened.

Yup, basically what I said :slap: The guy I talked to said, the car will be on power tour, and will be driven hard on the street, he wasnt' too sure about the track. He also said the owner did have an equal hand in the creation of the car. Ask Vince I couldn't stop raving about this car all day. Like Steve said, the best car I have ever seen. It wasn't the prettiest to the "eye" like the balwin camaro, but it is better that way! BTW whats funny is I remember PHR mentioning way back that they were planning this car to be the baddest PT car ever, and that it is supposed to do Everything better than anything out there. They sure did succeed!! All they need now to hold the crown is to go out and do it!

I was the only guy crawling on the ground taking pics underneath the car LOL. What a humper I am!! and if anyone is wondering, they (from what i was told) cut open the down bars on the roll cage, then welded a small diameter tube inside of it and then put the carbon fiber insert in the opening. So that is why you see carbon fiber on the roll bars. SUpposedly it also stiffens up the cage(the extra tube). Another note is that the body unbolts from the entire chassis, without touching the cager, the entire body can be lifter up(or something like that)

Do we really want to go down this road again? I said my peace in the previous thread. I still think that 20 inch wheels do not belong on a car that is supposed to be designed with the ultimate handling in mind. Once again, this is not MY opinion, but a proven concept based on years of development by many racers combined with simple physics. If you pay careful attention to the Cuda, you will see that there were measures taken to cut unsprung weight. The rotors were made from titanium. This was no doubt done to counter the 20 inch wheels. This is certainly a step in the right direction.

That car was my favorite of the show. The owner is a friend and he has been telling me for months that it is the baddest MF on the planet. If you know Bob, every other word is a cuss word.. The pictures don't do the car justice. Alan Johnson and his crew are by far the most talented builders I have seen. Put this car in a room full of cars and every other car will pale in comparison. Bob deals in collector cars and I'm sure this car will be put up for sale at some point. I'm guessing this might be the first car of this type to sell for over 1 mil. This car was done in less than a year. I'm told Alan is building a Camaro that will equal this car. Seeing this car in person made the whole trip.

Makes the $100- $200,000 cars look pale in comparison.

Does it have an adjustable ride height? How does the front tires turn lock to lock?

Steve Chryssos
11-06-2005, 03:38 PM
It's not airbagged. Bilstein coil-overs. I asked myself the same question so I watched them move the car during show tear-down. The clearance is there.

Another subtle trick: The air extractors on top of the front fenders double as clearance for the front tires during bump travel.

Awesome car, but I agree, those rims are a bit much...

Brandon Miller
11-06-2005, 04:43 PM
If you look at all the pics available you can see it has plenty of turning clearance. It has the heat extractors in the fenders for additional tire clearance along with several mods to the front suspension.

I'm going by my eyes watching it being pushed out of the building. The aisle is pretty wide and turns into a much wider aisle on the outside edges to go to the exit. Every car made it easy, but they had to make a 5-6 point turn to get it around the corner. And yes, they were turning the wheel all it would go as you could see the guy hit the steering stops every time.

Turning the wheels is a big issue, but it seems like the track width must have to be severly compromised as well.

And as we all know lateral weight transfer as regards tire load is solely a function of CG height and track width.

I love how he took the theme of the blacked out top like the old Cuda's and Boss Mustangs had and replicated with the black carbon fiber finish.

I'm not so hip on the carbon fiber inserts in the roll cage, that's just gay. But the car is awesome I can't wait to read more details in PHR. Especially the body mods, they look reallynice.

If you need to make a tight turn , stab the throttle . I was thinking the very same thing. Steering with your right foot. It was a very cool car to look at though. The front fenders were made totally out of carbon fiber from what I understand and the tops of the doors had c/f inlay. Which btw was flawless. Absolutely superb craftsmanship with so many little things, that it took several looks to see them all.

I'm going to agree with Jody here, kboring. 99% of the comments in this thread have been positive, and those that did not like the car are entitled to their opinion just the same. It's called freedom of speech.

You're the most hostile person in this thread, so lets take it down a couple of notches.

I'm sorry, but how much did this car cost to build -- $1,000,000? Most people do not have that much money to spend on a house, let alone a car. And before you go off the handle about people talking smack, go back and view my comments about the car. I think it's an amazing machine, and definitely a top rank pro-tourer/performer. Absolutely and completely amazing! I am stunned. Are they really going to drive in the Z2Z? I hope so but I would be even more stunned to see someone drive a one off 1 mil car that hard. :worship:

I can't wait to get more info on this thing...In a recent mag there was a story about the resurgence of Mopars along with construction pics of some...including one from Alan Johnsons shop. I wonder if this is that car?
this is the only Cuda that Alan has ever built..in fact the first street machine he had built was my 69 RS Camaro that was runner-up to Chicayne for Goodguys Street machine of the Year..he is known for street rods, but my Camaro and Cuda have given him some serious gratification..probably more than his 32 3 window Ford Coupe with a 454 cu in. SB2 Nascar Chevy engine, Richmond 6 speed trans, and Winters Quick Change rear..He's got the G-Machine bug bad..and he don't want no cure

Bob Johnson

5" of ground clearance?!?!?!

That is amazing considering how low the thing looks. They must have really channeled over that AME chassis.
car is flat bottom..exhaust and driveshaft(not a torque tube)run thru the tunnel..nothing is lower than the frame, rockers, etc, what you see from the side is as low as it gets

Bob Johnson
12-06-2005, 06:15 PM
Very nice car indeed - i see lot's of idea's that i may copy
seems like everyone is concerned about the 20" wheels...Alloway and Trepanier both went with 22's..we felt like that overpowered the car..when the car is in competition it will not have 20's..our sponsors like Bilstein, Hyperco Springs (which by the way are Titanium), and Addco will tell us what size tire and wheel will make the car handle the best. The tires on the Cuda are what come on the new Porsche Carrera GT. I think they will handle what we will throw at them on the street

It amazes me how we get to see the SMOY winners earlier and earlier every year, and like any other big competition award out there, they are getting more and more money invested in them! Absolutely awesome car, no check that, unfreakin' believable car!! There is some very serious talent in GA (Alan Johnson, Greening's, Paul Atkins)!
Alan Johnson, Paul Atkins, and Jessee Greening are all in Alabama

So you guy's know, I saw Bob's name on a shirt and approached him as a nobody. I talked with Bob for quite a while at PRI about the car. As down to earth, a real gearhead as anyone could meet.

Good to meet you Bob, I won't tell you again how cool the car is, It would start to sound like I was grabbling, LOL!

And for the record, Yody was not the only one under the car. Our own Larry Callahan caught me checking out the way the big boys do it.

That transaxle shot is just sex...just absolute sex...

I want two.

I had no idea so much awesome stuff was going down in GA! I always figured I'd have a long drive if I ever decided to have some one build a nice car for me...
the suspension is coming out as soon as Popular Hot Rodding does their shoot this Fri, Sat. all the barbs, seams, etc will be ground smooth and then annodized. The new trans and rear from Rockland Gear will be installed. They are good for over 1,000 hp

you've got way more stuff than anyone deserves already. I have my eye on that puppy too..but I believe there will be someone there with longer arms and deeper pockets than we have..let's do a joint venture..The Cuda will have the biggest coverage ever in PHR. Johnny Hunkins is all fired up and promises me the best photos of all time. he's spending nearly 3 days shooting it. There is supposed to be a pull out poster in the magazine. lots of build up photos too. If I know Johnny, it will be the coolest photography ever. it is our plan to run in the Big Red Challenge..I want them to allow the naturally aspirated cars like Big Red and the Cuda be able to run nitrous. It's easy for the supercharged, blower, or turbo cars to raise their boost levels to compensate for the over 7,000 adjusted foot above sea level altitude. Normally aspirated cars would have to build a 16 to 1 motor to compete..nitrous on the normally aspirated motors would level the playing field. We are working with Year One to do a challenge at their Year One experience in May. They have Atlanta Dragway, and Road Atlanta at their disposal..skid pan, road course, autocross, etc..everything but enough space to do the 0 to 200 to 0. We'll be working on that.

I was going to recommend Maxton in my initial post, but I thought there might not be enough stopping distance and / or run off. I'm planning on running my car at Maxton when complete, I'd love to see the Cuda down there running.

I've heard Maxton requires a parachute (even if not in use?) for all cars running over 160mph; I wonder if this will be discontinued for the 0-200-0 event?

the car was very close to being somewhat of a lime green. my 56 Ford Triton V/10 pick-up and my 47 woodie were both green...seemed like lots of people just don't like green...I wanted a panther pink color but Alan Johnson and designer Chris Itoh both nearly had a heart attack..I had just shoved the dual headlights and billboards down their unapproving throats so I gave in on the color and we all agreed on orange..I think it was the right move

So that awesome Cuda is yours? I remember gawking over you V10 Effie at the 25th Super Nats. My friend and I spoke with you briefly. I took tons of pictures of that truck It was simply amazing. The yellow wheels on the green truck was the killer thing for me.

seems like everyone is concerned about the 20" wheels...

It's good to see that you guys planned multiple setups for the car (i.e. street and race). Too many folks assume that if the car is too slick or too expensive that it won't get used. K&K Insurance offers competition coverage, so running a high end car is not such a risky proposition.

I'm looking forward to the Maxton test.

I would have to say it's one of the most innovative/impressive car ever built and I look forward to seeing it in person and seeing more build pictures of the car. To me it’s not about the finished car it’s about what it took to get it there.

It's cars like this that move the car building hobby in new directions. Even if most people can only dream of building a car like this at least they can learn new ideas. If everyone did the same thing over and over again it would get very boring.

Johnny Hunkins from PHR was @ Johnsons Hot Rod Shop over the week-end to shoot the Cuda..will be in the PHR April issue..on stands in February..Some super photography..should be about 16 pages of shots and build up coverage shots Alan made during construction. Biggest coverage ever for PHR.. I just wish you could find PHR on a magazine stand somewhere. When my Camaro ran, I was out of town and went to 10 places before I had to go to a big bookstore to find PHR. I had one at home but I wanted to see it before I got back to town. Alan shot some pix of Johnny and the Cuda while Johnny was shooting..someone tell me how to forward them to this site and I'll share them with you. They're pretty good..You think Johnny gets rattled at sunset, you ought to see him when the light gets perfect and his battery takes a dump as does his back-up battery due to the super cold weather..on his last sunset shoot..he had a head cold, the flu etc, had been laying on the cold wet ground for two days and thennn..dead batteries..he went medieval..but he and Alan made up for it..Monday he sent me a pix of the Cuda he had taken..it was pink..said he didn't know what had happened..it was a new Camera Ed Zinke had given him before he left..he hadn't used it and for some reason the car turned out pink in all his photos..didn't know why..I just knew he was BSin me,, but he stuck with his guns and said he was going to either come back out or try to change the color..wanted to know what I thought..I had already seen some pink hues in the billboards when photographed in certain light and kidded Alan that the car was destined to be pink..I said maybe there is a story to tell here..guy wants his car kind of panther pink and builder and designer ride him until he changes his choice..but when photographed, it shows pink. Johnny never fessed up but Alan started laughing after a couple days of me jabbering about the phomenon.

I've watched Johnny work on many occassions over the years. He is extremely dedicated. If he had to lay on a bed of nails to get the right camera angle, then he'd surely come away looking like swiss cheese and springin' a few leaks.

it's a piece of aluminum plate that Alan machined a design on. The rear motor plate looks like it's a part of the firewall but there's a small gap between them. The front motor plate is aluminum and also serves as the mount for the accessories i.e. power steering pump, air conditioning compressor (gotta keep the fat man cool), and alternator. no mechanical water pump..two electric pumps hidden below..hoses run to the side and thru the frame to the radiator..one pump for each bank.

notice the tail light lens..Tony at Alan's shop put some mo jo on them..they look a whole lot better..we're getting new ones made..paid 3K for the first ones..he wanted 2K more..I said the 3K was beyond insanity..2 more was *&%$@#?&. I think he understood me. This one off stuff is crazy expensive

I have to ask, what makes a $3000.00 set of tail lens?

Bob Johnson
12-17-2005, 06:43 PM
the lens are cheap... the molds cost the big bucks..if you divide it across 1,000 or say 10,000 pieces, it isn't much..but divide it across 1 or 2...it'll hurt you bad..we'll probably sell some of the rear spoilers..maybe some front spoilers..help soften the blow..but the other carbon pieces are modified way too much to fit a regular Cuda..I want to measure across the tail light lens..maybe we could sell them to guys with 72 and later Cudas to get rid of those hideous round lights

Awesome car and sooo much custom work done that everywhere I look at it there is something one off. Just incredible :yum:

With all of the carbon fiber on it and aluminum I am very curious as to what the car weighs?

Thanks for the pics and hope everything goes for you when it gets to the Z2Z. It will be one cool video if it gets captured in motion.

Did they pull the mold right off the car? Thank you Bob and Alan for posting the cool pics and the answers. Alan, don't you think that firewall would have been a little easier on a CNC? A beautiful "Art" Morrison frame....
Art Morrison just bent the main frame rails..Alan had no way to bend them vertically to that degree so he got Art do them..Alan and crew built the chassis..it's Art's Rack and pinion..Alan doesn't have a CNC..but he's looking at them..gotta use what you have..got to have enough of that kind of work to keep a CNC busy. 3K is not for the Carbon piece across the back..just the two tail lights..Alan didn't charge for this..I had them made by an outside vendor...I didn't see how he did the spoiler but it's just a carbon overlay now..they're going to do a mold and make it all carbon fiber. maybe Alan will respond on all the metal and clay work it took to do that set of front fenders and hood. Chris Itoh, Alan, Tony, and Greg did the clay work..I tried it for a few minutes and promptly threw in the towel. Chris was a real trooper..not many designers come out and work like he did. I truly believe no other designer could have accomplished what he did..his ability to communicate with the owner and the builder is phenomenal He is tha man. Alan is the man..Tony Inman is the man..hell even Alan's dad is the man..Angie is the wo man. I know of no other shop that does work to this level all in house. Hard to farm out work when you're in podunk Alabama.

thanks a bunch..I hate to read in magazines guys writing in complaining about the big buck builds..they want more on backyard budget stuff. When I was raising my children and cars weren't a priority, I used to read magazines and dream of the day I could afford and justify spending the bucks it took to build a top notch car. I got crazier and crazier and decided before the big buck bug hit street machines that had already hit hot rods, I wanted to build the best there ever was street machine. How many people can say I had the best of anything that ever was? Well I think Alan has done it..I'm sure there are naysayers, but the feedback from most of the top builders that were @ SEMA supported my opinion. I just hope this car gives inspiration to car guys and gives them motivation to work and move forward. Big buck guys buying up muscle cars just makes the cars on the lower rungs more valuable. They are good for the sport. Whoever heard of anyone wanting the stockmarket to go down where you could afford to buy. The Barrett Jacksons, Mecums, R&M's, Russo Steeles, Kruses, Silvers, etc are good for the game. If you can't afford a first gen Camaro, go to the second gen. Each one that goes up makes the next less valuable one go up too. Get in at the level you can afford, do some cool stuff to it and don't knock the big guns that are bringing all the values up. keep humping and you will be the big boy one day. Like Charlie

Guys like you and Charley and others are an inspiration to people like me. Think about it. We see pictures of your garages, the cars are usually in the magazines, and we drool over them. I wasn't originally going to do a PT car, but after seeing so many fine examples, the bug hit and hit hard. I am now probably spending five times what I though I would, but in the end, the car will be far superior from its former self. If I went to Barnes and Noble and saw a magazine cover with 1979 Ford Fairmont on it, I probably wouldn't buy it. No inspiration. You guys have collections that inspire. I've spent most of my life playing with cars, trucks and mountain bikes. I even had a 3,000 dollar frame on a bike that i pedaled. Most of my friends used to say, oh look at that guy and his big dollar bike. What they didn't realize was at night or during the day i was alway's looking and thinking of way's to make money. When i was 16 i built my first truck. I worked two job each day so i could afford the things i wanted. I learned early that if you want something then you and only you are the one that can make it happen.

I commend people that build there dreams and make them happen. It's even nicer when the builder/owner is down to earth and doesn't flaunt it in everyone face. You have got to be one of the best car owner/builder i've ever seen on the net. You fit in like a regular guy and that is how it should be. It's not what you have or have not it's what you do with what you have.

Okay enough of my Doctor Suess rambling (just read one of his books to my kids) thanks for being one of the regular guy's and sharing with us your build and your idea's.

The car appears to be sectioned up towards the front and added to in the rear.....do you have any bare metal shots of the car before you sent the front fenders off to be made out of carbon fiber....

[QUOTE=zrrigid]So that's for the carbon piece all the way across the back? That is understandable, there is alot of time in building the mold. Did they use foam or clay to shape the piece before they made the mold? Did they pull the mold right off the car?

The rear body panel was ready for paint. The surface was built up .020" using tooling wax and the mold was made from this surface. The finished part is just .030" and fit perfect. Doug Groh of 3 G Services in MI did all the carbon work. He is a member here but I don't know his user name.

I wanted the look of the machined firewall was the main reason. It really isn't a removable part once the car is assembled. The steel cowl of the car was modified for the aluminum firewall to bolt to. The firewall is not only a structural part of the body, but also ties the body to the roll cage where the front down tube is located.

Van B

The top of the door bar on the rollcage looks like it was cut out and there is another layer underneath it. I am wondering what the function of that is.

The car was sectioned from the doors forward. Zero at the quarters, 1 1/4" at the front of door and around 3 1/2" at the front. The lower body line on the doors and fenders was moved down to get the proportions right. The front wheel wells have been moved 4" forward and 1" up. The front 10" of the fenders have been pulled in to slim up the profile around the grill.

Brand X Bobby Johnson2 my illigimate bast**d son,has been trying to post his pix and he doesn't try until late..he's a hard working guy..and he's experienced difficulty. Alan said he has had problenms late too..does this have a curfew?

Here are some construction shots of the headers, exhaust and engine accessories. BTW nice truck project syborg tt.

Thank you. I'm trying to build something different. Seems like no one builds trucks anymore.

Thanks again for the pictures. If you have a bunch of pics i can host them for you on sportmachines.com

What's the tallest person that could fit in the cuda? Was it built more for bob's height?

How did you go about bolting up the frame to the body?

the site tends to run out of bandwidth at night. also, if ralph is in the admin CP fixing anything, the site is pretty screwed for the time he's on. It'll stop soon when we switch to the new format on the way bigger server...

Soon very soon...

The main floors that go from the center tunnel to the side rails aren't removable. Everything else is removable. I will try and find some better photos.

Cool, would you happen to have some rear floor shots? did you guys use a fuel cell?

Exactly what Tony ^ said. Unfortunately, we're at the absolute maximum for bandwidth usage on our shared server, and when the site gets really busy at night, it shuts down for about 15-20 minutes or so. We apologize for the inconvenience, as we realize it is very frustrating. We're going to be switching to our dedicated server right after the holidays, and that will solve the problem, and make the site much quicker. We've wanted to make the switch for a while now, but there have been innumerable software delays, and they’ve really held us up. Some of them are still not fixed, but we’re going to have to make some compromises and just make the switch.

As for your son, I think I fixed his account two nights ago; he should be able to post pictures, if he can get on the site when it's not too busy. If he's still having trouble, let me know.

I said he was my bas**rd son..In name only..make no bones about it, if he was really mine,he would have been one of those babies left on somebodies door step..or the dumpster..no really he's a good guy..we just kid each other constantly..he calls me da da..I would loved to have had a son..especially a hard working, knowledgeable, skilled one like him..he'll have some interesting photos of his car..worth your view..

the Camaro had some 3"very short Flowmasters..all they did was agitate the sound..I liked it..The Cuda has 3.5"pipes..the mufflers are chambered..we didn't have room for a big muffler so Alan put the chambered exhaust on it

I just checked the statistics, and this is now the most replied to thread on pro-touring.com. The most viewed is The SN65 mustang thread; it's got about 1k more views.

wishful thinking there Charlie..but that's not what I was saying..if those gals are diggin on ol Budda, pickins must be pretty slim..bad ratio of men to women, and most of the men are gay.you know.. like in California..where you are..you know how all the gays got out of Frisco so fast when they had the earthquake? They already had their sh*t packed....like the most used pick-up line in Charlies favorite bar..can I push in your stool? all BS aside, not saying there a lot of gays in California, but word is most will hold one in their mouth..till the swellin goes down..
