      adjustable suspension: springs

hi all, this is my first post. ive been lurking for some time now.

im building my 71 comet in the pro touring theme. my past cars have all been drag race orientated. now i want to try autocrossing and road racing while also being able to take a trip to the dragstrip.
what i would like to be able to do is to have the stiff spring rate for handling and a soft spring rate for dragracing. now i plan on using 2 way adjustable shocks or coil overs on the front but im not what to do about spring rates. is their any way to be able to alter the effective spring rate (front end coil springs) to be stiff for autocross and then soft for dragracing.
i have seen on the off road trucks where they use two different springs with a sliding sleeve between them. could that be done on a coil over. and make it so the sleve could be locked to the shock to lock out the soft spring then unlocked for dragracing?

thanks to this board for being here and being so full of great info.

If you run coilovers, it will make for realy quick and easy spring changes. Changing spring might be the least complicated and best function method.

BTW, welcome. I love me the maverick/comet.

ive been brainstorming on this. if you look at the coil overs on an off road race truck, you will see they use 2 springs with a slider between them. so i got to thinking. if i was to use two springs with a slider modified with locking ring in the center i should be able to create a "adjustable" spring. the idea would be to have a soft spring on body side of the coil over. it would need to be around 4". then a stiff spring on the top. when wanting the soft ride the slider would not be clamped. the soft spring would be working. when i want a stiff spring rate only, i can clamp the slider to the shock. this would lock out the soft spring.
its just a matter of if their is enough space for every thing and if i can get the right spring rates in the right lengths.

are their any body who is involved in the spring industry that can advise me on how to figure out the spring rates?
