Trial start up with Stealth Ram

On the recommendation of my engine builder I am planning on taking my SBC into a local engine shop to get it dyno tested and broken in. The shop recomended that they start-up and do the initial break-in with a good known to work carb set up. I agreed as I don't want to start with the Stealth Ram set up that I have. I bought the Stealth Ram from a guy who has had it since brand new and never got around to installing it and scored a pretty good deal on it, or so I thought.

Turns out this is the original Commander 950 and from what I understand I can't even hook into it as I don't have anything older for software that my current Windows 7 laptop. I've contacted Holley and am now left with a decision to make.

1 - find an older laptop and then hook up the Stealth Ram set-up and get it fired up on the dyno and play with it until I get it running properly and see if I can make it match the baseline run that it did with the carb set up.

2 - Buy a new harness and ECM set-up from Holley and see if it makes life easier to start-up and tune

3 - Someone on here tells me something I haven't thought of

Any information or input from someone "been there, done that" would be very much appreciated before I go spend a bunch of $$$ at the shop and get this thing running.

Buy the new self learning EFI from holly and skip the trip to dyno. Use the money saved to put towards the new unit. I have it on my 427 small block works nice fires right up no brainer

thanks q67. I am thinking I'll still do the basic dyno and get the engine broken in and dyno tested. Which system did you go with? They even advertise the HP EFI ECM & harness as an update replacement for the older C950.

Anyone else do an update like this or ever seen or talked to anyone who did????

      Todd,

Yes, it's an older system, but properly tuned, it will give you just as much HP/ TQ as the newer systems. The new Holley EFI ecu's have self learning capability along with sequential injection and coil on plug ignition so they have better emission performance along with slightly better idle and low speed performance. They're is a lot of info on using the C950 including using the newer Windows environment at:

Drop them a line; Doug Flynn, who helped develop both the old and new systems for Holley, often chimes in.

It's well worth the update. Especially for someone new to EFI. The 500-601 is the drop on and there are also some nice options to go with the new EFI aswell. You'll also need to consider what you want to cover for igntion. The standard GM small HEI will only support bank/bank however there are drop in dual sync distributors available for SEFI control.
