Does Boyd even pick up a wrench anymore? I know that Chip does...

From what has been said on various boards, Discover fabricates most of the drama, I and believe it. It could be a build up to a buildoff, but I would vote for Foose either way. Overall, i think that TLC Rides presents the builds way better than Discover does on American Hot Rod or Chopper. TLC doesnt have all the fake drama. Just the normal deadlines an more attention to the details.

thats kinda funny...as i remember...foose used to do the designing for boyd...and got little/no recognition for his work... now that foose is making it big...boyd is pissed about it. boyd cars will always demand respect... just look at twin sting, but anymore....boyd really doesnt have a lot to do with the cars his name goes on..... but he does give "some" credit to the guys who DO make it happen.

i wonder if he fires his guys who associate at westcoast choppers.... i see working at boyds makes a great stepping stone to making millions in your own shop.

The rumour I heard was that years ago Boyd was charging things to client that they did not recieve.Boyd was essentially embezzling money form clients.Foose worked for Boyd at the time and when Boyd got caught the feud started.

I dont know either of these guys so that story could be complete BS, but I have heard it a few times from different people so it could be true.

Jesse and Chip seem to be the most talented of the tv builders, Boyd was a pioneer in hot rodding but now his show is a cartoon.Boyds nicest cars were when Chip was around. Jesse may seem a little arrogant but he backs it up with skill and I love his taste in vehicles.

I do have a friend who knows the occ guys and says they are good guys, Ive had bikes for years and I cant believe people buy thier bikes, they are for little kids and wannabes.

Those are just my opinions, so nobody blow a fuse if you disagree.

How about a celebrity death match! And Boyd can be the 400 lbs he used to be.

You know, I don't know what happened to Boyd but he used to be somebody I actually wanted to work for after I graduated from school with my design degree. I even cold called Boyd when they were still Hot Rods by Boyd. I called them up back in 1994 and he took 15 minutes out of his busy schedule to actually talk to me about what I was doing in school, my interests and even asked for me to send in a portfolio and resume. Whether anything came of it or not I thouht that was pretty cool at the time for somebody as busy as he was to take a few minutes to chat. Now, seeing the show and what goes on there it just gives me a negative feeling. The other thing about Boyd, in my opinion, is that the cars they build really don't even compare to the radical rides they built when Chip was there. Remember how innovative that stuff was for the times - HOLY CRAP! Aluma Coupe - mitsubishi rear engined futuristic late 30's hot rod, Chezoom, Cadzilla and the Hogzillas? I could go on and on. The stuff they build now is just - YAWN! Look at the rods Chip is building - unbelievable, especially that last sedan he just built - DROOL!

Anyways, Boyd Coddington and his hot rods just aren't the same as when Foose was there and it shows. Chip has got loads of talent and style and it shows in his work and his attitude. I think Chip would smoke Boyd in a Hot Rod build off hands down. I'd be willing to bet Boyd wouldn't even take the challenge because I think he'd already know the outcome.

I couldn't agree more with JohnnyG. Especially the build-off. Boyd would never agree to that.

OK, inside info here that I know first hand as I have known Boyd since the 80's when Chip and Jesse James both were working for Boyd. Boyds shop, Hot Rods by Boyd, filed bankruptcy after he went went through a divorce and was removed from the company. After the divorce he no longer owned a majority of the then publically traded company and was fired and removed from the company. Several months later they began having problems which later resulted in bankruptcy and the end of the company. He had nothing to do with that. As for the fued with Chip it is just a little ego thing between them both. Chip designed great cars some based on Boyds ideas some his. Boyd was the intivator in the industry at the time and had found Foose. Foose later started his own thing after the decline of Hot Rods by Boyd at a time that Boyd could not even use his own name on cars or wheels because of the loss of the rights to the name in the stock deal on Hot Rods by Boyd. The TV shows dramatize the Boyd-Chip thing. Chip is at the top of his game for sure. Boyd was the leader many years ago and still makes a great car. Forget the stupid shows and look at cars like Whatthehey. That is an innovative car by Boyd! They are both great builders and great guys. I personnally know them both and appreciate and respect what they do. It is business and they are competitors. Just remember to not judge what is on tv. Most of it is fake!! Overhaulin and AHR are fake!
OK, now that I am done with that rant. Have a nice day and enjoy all the cars built by all the guys building them out there!

I forgot one more thing. I would love to see a buildoff between the two. Only thing is you would have to give them the same financial support. That Riddler winning car Chip built cost the owner over 1 million to build. Whatthhey by Boyd was under 500,000! Big difference!

Well stated "twinsting". You beat me to the punch with the factual information concerning the fate of the original "Hot Rods by Boyd".

By the way, your Corvette is fabulous! One of Boyd's finest builds!

i'd still like some closure on the whole overhaulin' olds thing, foose knew what was going on and that those guys got screwed. I wonder if he ever pressured them to fix that car.

I remember Chip saying on the show that with half of the car done they had over 3000 hours in the car... In the last three months they had ALOT of people working on the car...

If you figure they had 6-7000 man hours in the car at $175 an hour (this is what i heard they charge) that comes out to about 1 million dollors in just labor not including the parts on the car... SO i figure they have at least $1.3 million in that car if not 1.5! OUCH

It was truely an amazing car though!! You could look at it for hours.. Really gave me insperation to work on my own car!

oh, they blew the engine up in the car, it's undriveable. they were told when they were to take the car to baby it and trailer it. it had 4.11s in it and they took it down the freeway at 70 mph. then they proceeded to burn the tires off of it till the hoses blew. the motor over heated and smoked the rings.

they painted the valve covers and air filter lid. cleaned er up and called it good.

the car is broken. the reverse lights dont work, and there are lots of other saftey problems. do a google search on overhaulin olds 442 and see what pops up.

any way, to bring this show back on topic.

Seems that anyone with a new idea or way to build cars is met with a closed mind at boyds. the show makes it sound as though he's real resistant to new ideas.
Bluebear: new ideas on rat rods = fired.
Charley: better, more realistic ideas on scheduling and time frames = fired
Mike: better more realistic ideas on build times, and quality = fired

boyd needs to remember that once, his ideas were contrary to how things got done. he needs to look across the board at jesse and chip (and desmond) and think, "hmm, perhaps i should have listned to them." the evidence is all around him that these guys are on to something huge.

I agree with Twinsting to a certain degree. They both build great cars I just think Chip is able to take it a notch or two higher than boyd. I agree the shows are probably amped up pretty high to get the drama going but most of what I base my opinion on is the cars that have been being built lately. Chip's stuff is off the hook. He's also the youngest guy to be inducted into the Hot Rod Hall of Fame, that's saying a lot. He really is a one man shop from concept sketch to grinding the metal to layin' down the paint he can do it all. I don't ever recall seeing Boyd do a sketch or layin' down the paint. Maybe he can do all that stuff or maybe he did it back in the day, but I see Chip actually doin that from sketch to paint - it's impressive. Since I've followed Boyd from back in the early 90's I've never seen him do that. I did like the yellow Mustang they did with the silver stripes but I'm a Mustang freak. I'd have like to see that car pushed further though - how about a minitub, maybe a supercharger? I just guess I miss the crazy wild hot rods that Boyd put out when Chip was stylin' them. They were always way beyond what anybody else was doin'. I'm sure Boyd's got a lot of good ideas, just see Chip always pushin' the envelope further than most builders.
Hey, I've even seen a few private owners build hot rods that were right up there with the both of them. Can't wait to go to NSRA show in Kentucky in 2 weeks, I'm syked!
