      Cool Carb works!

Just wanted to share my experience with the Cool Carb spacer/shield I picked up at Columbus this past weekend. I have been having a gas boil or vapor lock problem since last year and seemed worse this year. The ethanol crap doesn't help matters either. My problem starts when I get to about 180 or a tad hotter.

To cool things down,I figure I will add a better fan on the radiator. Looking to go with the LoPro fan with a shroud from Vintage Air. I picked it because it should fit my 68 Camaro Big Block that doesnt have much room left. I have the March Pulleys and one fan with no shroud now so hoping the LoPro will help keep things cooler when in traffic or running it hard.

Keep in mind that when I am moving, I have no issues. Actually, it drops pretty fast once I start moving after getting it toward the too warm mark.

Besides the need for a better fan setup, I knew the carb was getting too hot. While at the Good Guys Columbus show,I talked to a very confident salesman for a spacer of sorts to shield the carb from the heat. Others had mentioned him so I checked out his product. I decided to try it.

It is basically a set of thin spacers made of aluminum with a poly or resin in between. One goes on the intake and is the length of the carb. The other just fits under the carb just like a gasket. This helps with clearance. (You use 3 gaskets in between each piece too.

So......tried it in the heat today and it works! The dang thing works! I am VERY pleased so I wanted to share in case others are having this issue. I have been trying other things like swapping lines, moving hard lines farther from headers and electric fuel pump. None worked.

After I installed the Cool Carb setup, I let the car get to 200 and just a tad over 200 and no problems. I will test more this week as I can and keep you updated but right now, my test was a success and I am very happy.

That Goodguys C-10 has one of those on the truck...and I bought one at the show as well! I will install it soon.

Real data from an infrared gun would be nice to see if anyone can post it. I'm curious how many degrees this will actually drop your fuel temp.

I've been using a Mr. Gasket stack setup for years. I've never had vapor lock issues even when temps were over 100 in staging areas, on tracks or wherever. I'm curious as to whether the large plates would be much different or if they might actually raise the temp compared with the smaller Mr Gasket plates when the hood is closed and underhood temps are high. The gas coming from the tank will keep the carb cooler if it's isolated from the intake. The large plates of the cool carb setup might be absorbing enough underhood heat so the top plate is the same as the under hood air temp while the top plate of the smaller plates might be lower than the under hood air temp. Back in the day guys used wood spacers which insulated also allowing the fuel to keep the carb cooler.

I would like to know the total thickness as well. My T/A shaker dosent leave much for spacers.

I'm now in the process of making a spacer/shield out of 1/8" phenolic. Sounds like a no brainier to me but I'll keep you guys informed as to how it works.
