Any upholstery Pro's out there that can help me find material? Please help!

I am trying to do something on a project car with my interior. I want to do some inserts in my seats using houndstooth black and white material like what was used in the 69 Camaro and Porsche 911's in the 60's. I can not seem to locate where to buy the material. I can find some stuff on Ebay, but I am not sure that is automotive grade material, it looks more like dress maker type stuff. I have seen guys here on this site using it, so I know it is available. It just seems like noone wants to divulge where they get it from.

Anyone ever work with it? Please help!

      Thanks,
      Glenn

You can also find apolstery grade fabric at some of the hobbie type stores. That's where I get mine in Kansas.

just google auto upholstery fabric, there are dozens of places online. Be sure to check abrasion resistance rating. I also reccomend marine UV resistance thread V92 if you have a machine that can handle a big needle. My last interior.

      Hey Glenn
I'm new to the board, but not this subject, give the following places a call and they will be able to help you out.
      http://www.smsautofabrics.com/ or try http://originalauto.com/

They are no secret, and I'm more than glad to share some sources and info if and when needed. These guys will sell to you no problem, although there are some where you need to be a trim shop to be able to buy from them.

      Hope this helps, Mike

      Mike,

your first post rocked!! Very helpful. I had heard of SMS, but not Original Interior. Good looking out my friend! Welcome aboard, plenty to see and learn here.

I still find it funny how there is a such a difference in material costs. SMS wants $79 per yard, Year One wants $99 and Your Auto Trim is only $19 per yard for the black and white houndstooth. Could there really be that much difference in the materials? I don' want to cheap out and get inferior material, but don't want to over pay for the same thing either.

      Hey Glenn
at 19.00 a yard I would be alittle leary as to whether or not its the real deal, and if you can see it in person to confirm that great... There is lots of stuff out there in fabrics that say they are one thing but if you know what you are looking for,... well its not always the real thing, but who knows , maybe... SMS is probably your best bet if you want to be sure though, they have never failed me yet.
Good luck with your project, Mike

+1 For SMS I use them on rare resto jobs quite a bit and they do a great job for me as well.
