      L99 good choice for swap?

I have a 69 camaro and I'm considering doing the LS swap. Right now I have the opportunity to pick up a L99 all Aluminum 5.3 H.O engine complete with all accessories and harness with ecu, swap fuse an relay box, a 2wd 4l60e trans with new pump for $1700.00. The engine has 50k on it but I don't care about the mileage as I'll be having it rebuilt locally by an engine shop (looking for around 600 hp motor).

First, is this a decent motor to do a swap with?
Second, are there any concerns with this particular model..L99 vs an LS2 or LS7?

I haven't done a lot of research on this topic yet as I am just beginning to explore but if I can pick up a good motor and tranny for this cheap I want to know that it is worth it with an L99.

      Thanks in advance.

The 5.3 HOs have 243 or 799 heads which are the same as the LS6 and LS2s.

A 50K engine is barely broken in, I'd leave it alone.

The L99 is a LS3 (6.2l) derivative. Sounds like a great price too. I'm not too familiar w the differences in an L99 vs an LS3, but if nothing major I'd just do a leak down and compression test and if good, cam it and call it done.

I think the all aluminum 5.3 is an L33. I also agree with leaving it alone @50K mi. 600hp from 5.3 will take a big cam & some hign end parts without F.I. ot NOS. Will also need to beef up that trans for 600HP. Sounds like a fair deal. Scott

An L99 is an aluminum 6.2 with active fuel management out of a new camaro.
An L33 is an aluminum 5.3 from around 2005 truck.
Screaming deal if it's actually an L99, grab it now! Still a good deal if it's an L33.

Thanks for the reply guys. Unfortunately, I'm too late as it is sold. I'll continue to keep a look out for some other deals.
I saw Pace Performance has a few decent deals. Anybody ever buy from them or heard of the quality of their engines?

Im sure that was a 5.3 having a 4L60E behind it. The L99 would have a 6L80E trans and would be MUCH more money. 1700 was still a great deal on the 5.3 especially if it was the all aluminum version. I have some LS2/4L70E drop outs coming if your interested in a 6.0. There more money but much more engine!

I might take you up on that. However, right now I'm content on my current tranny, TKO 600 5-speed RR. The only thing I would be looking for would be the engine.

I'm just looking at different options right now as I'm contemplating EFI conversion or LS Swap. EFI would be a lot cheaper unless I had a certain buyer for my current engine to offset the cost. A lot of thinking and planning to do.

If you are contemplating adding EFI to an older engine, then you really need to think hard about a LSx swap. Once you drive a LSx powered car, you will never want anything else, trust me...

Any details on the LS2/4L70e combos? I'm in the market for an ls/auto setup

I definitely agree with what Andrewb70 has said, the LS motors will deliver amazing power without suffering the drivability loss. I have talked to a lot of people who have done the LS swap into a classic car and many say they can't imagine going back. If you are interested we offer full turn key LS motors that will include everything needed to get the motor running with an EFI setup. Send me a PM with an email or give us a call at the shop and I would be more then happy to send a quote so you have an idea of cost and what is needed.

The more I read, the more I agree with you. I'm even selling this swap to my wife.

Shoot me a PM Brandon... I have some of the nicest LS take outs available...and you just cant beat the price! We provide custom harnesses, ECM/TCM tuning. I do cam/spring swaps if needed. I also can provide and install the Mast oil pans. I can fire and run your engine prior to shipping or you can hear it run when you pick it up! I also install these packages in customers cars if needed.

Send me a PM... I will hook you up with a nice low mileage take out engine... I can separate the trans and sell you the engine only since you already have your trans. I can also tell you what you need to get your TKO adapted to the LS motor.
