305 engine sputtering while driving, need help.

Car is a 79' Camaro with the factory 305,all original except edelbrock intake, holley 600cfm carb. Has new plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor.

It idles fine, but while trying to drive it, it starts to sputter and around 2k rpm it gets bad.

I have the timing set to factory specs. Could it be the distributor?

      If it's new, probably not.

Pop the valve covers and take a peek at the valvesprings. If one was broken, thats what it'd do...

Its the factory HEI distributor with new rotor and cap only. Replaced the valve covers and all the springs were fine. Another guy told me to pull the vacuum advance and see if it clears the problem. If it doesn't what do you suggest the problem is?

      Thanks for the reply too.

Not sure what years,,,but some years of those 305's had cam issues,,,my father had an '83 Impala with a 305 that had that problem,,,I was pretty young when it went in for a targetmaster engine,,,i do remember the thing banging away pretty good going down the road from the wiped out cam lobe,,,don't remember what it did at idle though!!!

Re-install the old plug wires, if no change check the carb
IF COMMON SENSE WAS COMMON EVERYBODY WOULD HAVE IT
