4l60e/4l80e
I have a chance to pick up a 4l80e trans for free. It needs rebuilt but a good core. I want to switch out my 700r4 for an electronic trans so i can switch to paddle shift and better tuning. I know that the 80 is heaver and needs some fitting to fit in my first gen camaro. I probaby wont see over 550 hp but you never know. The car will be used for street and autocross. Would I be smarter to sell the 80 and pick up a 60 or just do the 80? I would like everyones thoughts.

02-17-2012 #3Mark,
I feel that you are better off rebuilding your current 4L80E. In order to build a 4L60E to handle the horsepower it gets pricey. You will be surprised how well the 4L80E will fit in your tunnel, you might have to massage some near where the cooler lines go into the case, but nothing major. Don't worry about the extra weight, the strength gain is worth it. You will not need to install any major parts to the 4L80E in order to handle the horsepower you are dealing with, just a freshen with quality clutches, recalibrated valve body, a quality converter and a stand alone controller. If you haven't looked into the controller I would highly recommend either the Compushift or PCS Simpleshift. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. If there is anything we can do, let us know.
Thanks,
Mark
02-18-2012 #4Thanks Mark,
I cant pass up free but haven't had any experience with the 4l80's. Being at an machine shop/auto parts store I priced out tci's controller. I already have fast's ez system but my cost isn't a great savings so i'm going to do some looking at compushift and simpleshift. I know you talked about both at hot rod restoration show last year. you will be getting a call from me at some point.
02-19-2012 #5No problem Mark. You can't go wrong with either a Simple Shift or Compushift CS II. If you have any specific questions just let us know. If you call to purchase, be sure and mention that your a Pro-Touring member to get a discount on your purchase. If your at the HRR show again in March, feel free to stop by the booth to discuss them or come to our seminar on Thrusday.
Thanks,
Mark
02-20-2012 #6I'll be in indy thursday and friday and will stop by the booth.
02-20-2012 #7Ok, got the trans delivered to work today. Its a 98 4l80e. Now I need to total up all the expenses and see what its going to cost. Opinions on flexplates, I think I should use a sfi flexplate for the autocross. Who besides tci offers a flexplate for a ls and 4l80 combo?
02-23-2012 #8Mark B., are you bringing either or both units to indy. Would love to see them in person.
Thanks, Mark Antrim
02-26-2012 #9Mark,
Quicktime offers a SFI flexplate for the LS to 4L80E as well as TCI. As for the Simple Shift and CS II, I will have both on display at the HRR Show in Indy. I look forward to talking with you about your options.
Thanks
Mark
