      Changing 6th Gear

I have a couple of questions.

1st, I have a T-56 Magnum with the 2.66 first and .63 6th. I'm toying with idea of changing the sixth gear to the .50 gear set. My question is, what would the actual 6th gear ratio be using the .50 gear set from the 2.97 transmission in a 2.66 transmission? I would thing the ratio would be something other than .50 given the input shaft and cluster gear teeth count are different.

2nd, how are is to change just the 6th gear set? I've rebuilt Muncies, but I've never opened up a 6 speed.

Since I have my T56 apart right now, I'd say changing the 5th/6th gear cluster is pretty easy and could be done with it still in the car. The 5th/6th gears and the reverse gear are housed in the tail portion of the case so you just have to remove the tail shaft housing. If you've rebuilt Muncies then you should have no problem with doing this swap. BTW, the drive and driven gears pretty much come right off their particular shafts so you just need to buy the correct matching gears to make 6th .50.

I think that's pretty much all you need to know but I'm sure someone else will chime in if I've missed anything.

If you have a T56 Magnum, Tremec offers 0.50 6th main and cluster gears. Check the link about 1/2 way down on "T-56 Magnum 'Mix & Match' Overdrive Gears". Also note the Tremec Aftermarket/Performance website and Forum are finally up.

Thanks guys. Maybe I should have asked if anyone knows the tooth count for the input shaft and matching cluster gear for the 2.66 first gear and the tooth count for the .50 gear on the T56 magnum with a 2.97 first gear. I'm guessing that the .50 6th gear out of a 2.97 transmission will not be .50 in a transmission with a 2.66 first. If I know the two tooth counts, I can figure out the ratio

Input shaft gear and matching cluster gear makes no difference to the the 5th / 6th gear ratios, they remain the same.

Did you order it special with those gears? Just looked at Tremec's website & it says the 2.66 first gear trans has the .50 6th gear & the 2.97 1st gear one has the .62 6th.

T56 Magnum with 2.66 has 0.63 and 2.97 has 0.50 ... their new performance website seems to have some conflicting info depending which link you select?

Thanks guys, so it will be a true .5, that's good.

Yes, the ratios are the standard cogs. I really like the 2.66 and .8 5th. It is a semi-close ratio that is a good performance set for the LS3 eRod. I want to lower the rev's in 6th for cruising. It's currently 2400 RPM at 75 MPH. I'd like it below 2000. 6th can be used as low as 1200 RPM and pulls effortlessly up hill from about 1300 RPM.
