Overflow tank height

Does it matter how high you mount your overflow tank in relation to your radiator?

Most OEM ones seem to be about as high as the radiator, but not all. 4th gen F-bodies have it under the battery so maybe it doesn't matter how high up it is.

Does that go for a closed system too?

If you are talking about a system with a surge tank, the surge tank needs to be the highest part of the system. It doesn't have to be a lot higher, my 03 Mustang GT had the surge tank just above and behind the radiator.

If its an overflow tank which means when the coolant and pressure gets hot enough to overcome the radiator cap it will dump the excess into the overflow tank and when the engine cools down it will draw it back in…that’s an overflow tank no it doesn’t have to be higher then the radiator… surge tanks have to be close to the top of the radiator because that is where you put the coolant in the car and a pressure cap is on that tank. the tank must also be part of the circulation system
