      Dual mode side exhaust possible?

      Hey folks,

I am about to start a pro-touring restomod project with my father's 66 Corvette Coupe, and have a question. The car originally had side pipes, which I want to go with, but will be going with a larger diameter, uncovered pipe like the 3" side pipes I have seen on Grand Sport replicas. This will also allow the cammed LS7 (630hp) I plan to go with to properly breathe.

My uncle has an ERA 427 AC Shelby Cobra kit that sounds amazing to me. It is really loud, but to me, that is what a classic muscle should sound like. It is my hope to mimic that kind of sound with my Corvette project. The thing is, I would also like to be able to drive through my neighborhood without pissing everyone off; especially at night. I have done some reading about the dual-mode exhaust option with the newer Z06s, and the Mild2Wild product that some folks use to manually control the exhaust valves to allow for a regular or muted sound.

I realize with my set-up, there will be no dual-mode mufflers for me to use, so I was wondering if anyone knows, has heard, or thought of the idea of running a dual-mode set-up with side pipes. I know it will be a custom job, and probably very unique, but I can't be the first person to ever think of or desire this capability. I am guessing it would have to be some sort of a moveable baffle, rather than 2 separate exhaust paths, as is the case with all the dual-mode mufflers I have seen.

      Anyone have any insight?

      Thanks,
      Mike

Why not just run your sidepipe exhaust, but use an electric cutout to divert exhaust to a full exhaust system under the car? You could dump the rear tips before the bumper so they wouldn't be obvious, and it would still be far quieter than the open setup.

If you're not using the corvette style where the collectors are outside the car, you could put a muffler in front of the sidepipes somewhere with a bypass. I would think the kind where the in and out are on the same side would be easiest, then run a pipe going straight across both ports and put an electric cutout in the middle of them. Not up on corvettes, so I don't know if there is packaging space available up there.

Packaging is going to be tight if you want a muffler before the pipe exits the side of the fender. I have STS spiral baffles in my sidepipes and you can tune the sound by drilling/removing the cap at the end. Maybe turn that cap into a butterfly valve?

Run the electric cutouts, plumbing them to run straight thru the side pipe as their normal path. Run a secondary, muffled system parallel to the sidepipe and tie it into the backside of the sidepipe outlet. You will run the cutouts normally open but you can quiet things down by shutting them off and the mufflrd system will exit from the same spot. This what I will be doing on the van.

Google the cherry bomb camaro. saw it on stacy david's Gearz show. Cherry bomb could give you details, they had this built toadvertise.
On my LS1 el camino, I built a cable operated 4" cutout valve coming out the rear of the x-pipe , turning it into a y outlet & exiting through a megaphone shaped outlet. Having a little pipe length after a cutout helps the sound quality. If you like the sound of mine, you,ll love the sound of what you want to do.here,s a video.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3mL8...2&feature=plcp

It's not mine but I thought it was well crafted. It could be replicated decently to work with the full length sidepipes.

I like hessdawg's concept. Might be a bear to package that with the IRS....not sure how much room you have. Even a big dual in/dual out muffler where he has drawn his x pipe and merging back to the sidepipes after will help quite a bit.

cobra sidepipes are all different. the sidepipes on my factory 5 cobra are mild but I held them in place on a 67 vette and were around1' too short.
I have electric dumps on 2 of my cars and its the easy way of making noise at different levels depending on how much you open them.
the only problem is finding room for the y pipes ,on my brothers 65 vette it looks like it takes some tight s bends from the header to the sidepipe.
