I think they did come e-coated. There is a hint of black here and there in the welds and crevices. This one is naked.... Got it from a drag racing buddy who had a 83 pontiac Grand Prix in the low 10's. Heres a few crappy picts....

Cool, have heard of these but never seen one. Anyone know why some cars received this over the steel piece?

Not sure why some and some didn't though i have only found 3 in the since i started to hunt parts for my GP. All of the one's i found were in 78-81 Pontiac's 1 GP, 2 Le mans, the GP one was mangled beyond repair. I sold the other and kept one for me. I think they were General Motor's attempt to get mileage better on these cars by lightening them up a bit.... There are various other aluminum parts for different G bodies. Bumper cores, hoods on some models, trunks, bumper mounts etc etc...

these cars were used heavily in Nascar, could have been linked to that effort? available if you knew where to ask? just speculating not trying to claim racing vintage on the part. Good luck with the sale.

All of them were single headlight style, so to put them in a later model 4 headlight car requires opening up the buckets to the oval shape. I put one in my GN. Once I got my old one out the weight difference was barely noticeable on a bathroom scale, but it was there. they are black just like all the others, so take a magnet to check when junkyard shopping. stripping a front end down that far is a little work but we all know these Gbodies need all the dieting possible.

I can't see it on that one,but the easiest way to ID them is by the large "A" stamped into the top tie bar,as well as a magnet. The best cars to check out are the goofy looking 78ish aero back Cutlass,a lot of them had aluminum hoods and trunk lids as well. Most of these parts were experimental development pieces, they were never allowed in Nascar, but I'm sure the odd one snuck onto the track...
