I only read partway through, but that's just because I had a similar conversation with my AC repairman a few weeks ago - apparently there's a similar product that sprays the water on the AC coils. The downside there - that I would expect would also apply to the roof sprinkler - is the impurities in the water that would be left behind when it evaporated. You'd have to use distilled water or deal with whatever the result to the shingles would be.

Edit: Yes, he discusses this at the very end. Don't think we get enough winter rain/snow to clean the deposits off around here, so probably not so good for me (which is too bad, it's hot!)

I run a water softener so that shouldn't be a problem for me at least.

I ran the old fashioned fan type sprinkler on the flat roof of a building I rented for 10-12 years to cool the roof and reduce radiant heat that transfered into the building. Worked very well. Turned it on about 5 minutes every 45 minutes to an hour on hot sunny days.

This week is going to be brutal here.. central air is running almost non stop.. I'm half tempted to try and old fashioned sprinkler on the roof.

And I think that's all it would need. 5 mins every hour from 10am - 3pm.

We used to do that in Mississippi in the metal building where I put my car together. It made a huge difference. You couldn't stand it if there wasn't a sprinkler on the roof.

I have also heard of people having good luck with build a small roof over their a/c unit to keep the sun off it in combination with spraying the coils. Its simple and effective...but I have yet to do it....

You are much better off with a vegetative roof system which have been used for generations to keep a building cool. The bad part is the roof is the least part of the expense.

You are better off using a cool roofing membrane where reflectivity is 87% so the heat energy does not penetrate the building envelope to begin with. And with the use of PVC products a natural component of PVC is chlorine which is fire resistant. The majority of the product is sodium chloride (table salt) and is recyclable into new products such as aggressive flooring for restaurant applications.

This is the same product as the commercial accounts, but the residential use warranties differ making the installing contractor the most important element. PVC roofing systems have a well established track record of over 30+ years and the industry is returning to them after trying the latest/greatest/cheapest which has proven over and over to be your most expensive roofing system since you have to replace brand new roofs because they didn't have their formulations figured out yet. Remember that when you put Firestones on your expensive pro-touring ride. Same company. Same product. Public company with overseas ownership. Put more liability on the manufacturer. Hold them to it.

You have to remember you are using a sprinkler system to achieve the same benefits and I have seen it, but it was used on a ballasted EPDM application where he was more concerned with energy savings than preventing water from coming through the seams in a 10-12 year old roof. What a mess. 180,000+ feet of sprinkled roof with water coming in everywhere.

TPO and EPDM look like poopy on a residence. Even the "shingle" looking stuff. Great efficiency, but it all ends there!!! Perfect app for mobile homes, flat/low sloped roofs and commercial apps.
