      305 To 496

I have a 71 Chevelle, & Thinking of swapping my fuel injected 305 for a 8.1L (496) chevy bigblock engine fuel injected. any suggestions & is there any way to get better gas mileage out of the 496 (was thinking of Power Tour 2012)

Big Block, gas mileage, those two tend to not go together. If it is a late-model 8.1L (sounds like it is), you may get around 15-16 mpg at best, their not known for mileage.

If milage and performance is an issue, consider a 6.0 LQ/LY motor.
The long stroke and design of that engine is for lots of low end torque, not very good for mpg though.

15-16 mpg is great. I was being told 8-10mpg
I get around 12 from my daily driver (07 Dodge Charger RT AWD)

Yeah Big Block and "gas mileage" dont really go together in the same sentence.

I got the 15-16 mpg from a co-worker who had a 2500 4 dr truck, that was his average driving it daily. You may squeeze a little more in a lighter Chevelle, depending on gearing and driving style. Basically need to get the 8.1 running at the lowest rpm it can for it to have any chance at decent gas mileage.

If you are looking for a 496, I have a fresh one that is being pulled in the next week or so. Long story short, I bought a 69 camaro that was just built and am tearing it apart and going a different route. I have a guy that is interested in buying both the engine and th350, but no deposits or promises made. PM me if you are interested, I also have a couple videos of the 496 running. If you are looking for an LS, ping Daytonayellaz. Travis can find you low mileage LS for a good price. Good luck!

another thing to consider is that the 8100s dont have much aftermarket behind them, whereas the LS based engines the sky and the wallet litterally is the limit
