    Thread: Carbon FIber

    1. Carbon FIber

      Hey

I never saw the point to Carbon Fiber for a muscle car (it just seemed too modern to work with the old look)...

However, after looking at the exotics and some really nice CF work http://macarbon.com i was very impressed.

CF Not only looks absolutely beautiful but its strong and lighter than alluminium. U kinda get the complete package with it... strength (durability), lightness (better performance for car), good looks (what can i say?).

I really love the Idea to have the gearstick Ball in CF as you see on that main page.

So what you can do is have the numbers of the gears on the console with little lights under it 1-6, rather than having it on the carbon fiber ball, and then on the ball you can have the badge of your vehicle make like a + For the chevies and so forth.

THats my little idea of what would be nice. Might give u guys some idea to if ur looking for something a little different.

I like the looks of carbon fiber in many areas if it fits with the rest of the car, but that site you posted...$975 for a Paddle Shifter!? I know a good end result with cf takes work and materials but damn!

Did you see the $300 set of drink coasters?

Maybe Baer should sell mini brake rotor drink coasters. I'd rather buy that.

carbon fiber belongs on racecars for weight reduction or strength

You just said it....weight reduction. Why should that apply to race cars only?

I'd agree that for-looks-only things like shift knobs might be a bit much, but a carbon fiber hood or fenders save weight, better for the road course, and while it might not be much - I bet there is an improvement in fuel mileage too.

      there are options

if you like the look but can't find the part & prices are crazy high when you do there are coating shops that can create the corbon fiber look with a water dipping process. the average person cannot tell the difference. I am in the process of redoing my gauge cluster in my 71' It is an aluminum panel that will be dipped after everything is test fitted. you can't tell the difference

The valve covers I'm running are done that way. I wouldnt have done it on my own, but they were pretty cheap, fit the bill of what I needed, and already done like this. It does look pretty good...

One other advantage to CF, and fiberglass, is for inner front fenders. They can be molded in such a way to have a factory fit, but allow wider tires. You can also paint CF if you don't like the look of the CF. I hope to get a CF hood for my 68 for the uniqueness of it and also to save weight up front. Maybe a cowl and header panel too, but they all may get painted.

I really like the hoods painted and leaving the CF exposed as RS stripes.

It really tends to be a subjective choice as there are people using it for a look and others looking for function..... We are preparing to release product to the market place over the next few months in conjunction with Anvil Auto for early second gen birds and camaro fenders however there has been a lot of interest in interior trim pieces so we have molds underway currently to try to respond to market interest....

Carbon fibre is cool and good for race cars , but WAY over prised, if i need to make a choice between a fibre glass inner fender that costs 175$$ ore a carbon fibre one that cost 1250$$ then that chooice is quikly made specialy if you do it to save weight as the diferense is not al that big.. I can buy fibre glass frond fender,s inner fenders, pin on hood, pin on rear dek lid, doors, bumper frond and rear frond and rear spoilers. for the same price as 1 carbon fibre hood. what is wrong with this picture!!!. you might save 10 ore 15 editional lbs in the weight department. witch you can ez get back somewhere els..

    14. thanks for the feedback guys, wasnt expecting that

I guess all that extra $$$ is what it costs to get that little bit mor improvement on weight saving... so if $$$ wasnt the issue, thats the lightest u can get.

Its kinda like suspension I guess... u can pay 3000 for a general supension upgrade to corner more like modern cars, then it costs 20 000 to put it up to much better handling than normal cars... but the difference between that and the last 5% extra handling to be race like is more than tripple the cost.

Ive realised with cars to get that extra 5% capability out of the car costs as much as the first 95% improvement.

Nice picture of the Dipped thing... but that dont look like CF and neither is it light... but, cool if thats what you like. For me, I have never been an 'imitation' person, as I just feel crap having something looking like what it actually isnt... either get the real thing or leave it stock for me, dont know why but I feel like a tryhard if I was to have imitation stuff. Im not saying that is the case for anybody else thats just how it is in my head. Trying to make something look like something it actually isnt.

Guess thats why I hate "Clone" cars with a passion. Its just trying to be something it aint... id feel literaly S**t to own something like that.

You would think that if they can charge $300 for a set of coasters, that they could afford to pay someone to proof-read their advertisement ads......

Just to add my two cents. We manufacture carbon fiber for lots of people and so far not a single one has asked for the part to be bare carbon, they are more interested in the weight savings than having thick clearcoat on the part. So Id say yes, weight savings (instead of looks) can be a big plus for our cars which are not light weights to begin with.

I wish there were more parts available out there for our cars. I can't get enough of the stuff.
