Aftermarket cruise control
I'd like to hook up the cruise control in my '87 but use an aftermarket electronic version for a cleaner look under the hood.
Does anyone know if you can use the stock GM cruise control switch on the steering column to control the aftermarket setup? Has anyone done this that could give some tips?
For those of you running a manual trans, I'm assuming that along with a brake switch you have a switch that you use on the clutch pedal as well so that any time you depress the clutch it will turn off the cruise? What kind of switch did you use for this?
Lastly, what brand of cruise control is considered "decent"? I see a lot of places seem to use the Rostra brand units.
Thanks for the help,
Andrew

Andrew,
I've looked into this a bit for my 509BBC EFI conversion in my '79. Most of the aftermarket cruise controls are made by Rostra. In fact, I do believe they make them for one or two OEM car manufacturers as well. I don't think you can use your original stalk, but they do make replacements that should be a close or an exact match for your OEM one. The all electronic CC I looked at can use a clutch mounted switch, or it can dis-engage the cruise when it senses a sudden change in engine RPM's. I do believe the switch is an option. When you look at the Rostra site again, download their installation instructions, that should tell you everything you need to know.
