Can I attach console to the dash?

I'm going to start building a console tomorrow and am just wondering if it's okay to attach the console directly to the dash, either welded or by bolts or if it should be just close to it? I thought I read once that it shouldn't be attached, but I've seen some consoles that are attached and most new cars have it attached. Thanks in advance.

Just a thought here, I am finishing up the new floor pan in my 65 Chevelle after fully welding in the floor I was amazed how much it flexes in the center. I put a drive shaft hoop in the center floor brace and gusseted it to each side to stiffen the floor it helped but it still flexes some. I could see it causing problems if a center console was attached to the dash.
