Help: Wheels/ Steering won't return to centre after turning
Hello All,
I am having some trouble with my 1964 Chevelle. When turning to the right or the left, as I exit a turn i have to manually turn the wheels to centre. On most other cars i drive the wheels will correct automatically as I exit the turn. Further the front end when driving in a straight line tends to wander and does not always track straight (especially in the lane closer to the side walk where the slope is greater).
This problem was not there until I had a shop install my 'Classic Performance Products' tubular upper and lower control arms. They had it aligned after the install. I have noticed that the spacers in the rearward upper control arm mount on each side are about 3/4" thicker than the front spacers. So I have to assume there is even greater Caster than the tubular uppers create.
I after the problem became evident, I also installed a lee 670 steering box and the problem remained so I know it is not the steering box.
Other mods to the front suspension include:
-Hotchkis 2" lowering springs
-1" sway bar
-Bilstein/Hotchkis shocks
Could the lowering springs mess up the geometry and cause these symtoms? Is it too much caster?
Could it be that the power steering pump is on its last legs (it does make a horrible shreaking sound when getting to the end of the steering articulation when turning left or right)?
Thanks for taking the time to read and let me know if you have any input that may help me.
