      Help with my 67 rust

I pulled my windshield out to replace it with a new. Upon cleaning up the area I found some bondo that was put on by the previous owner. I scraped all the bondo and rust off and hit it With the wire wheel. I wanted to know if I should weld a peice of sheet metal and coat it with something? And what can I coat it with(filler rust preventive)? Thanks

How much work are you doing on the car right now? If your only driving it around and fixing bodywork, I might be inclined to get some fiberglass and patch it temporarily. If you weld any sheet metal in there, your going to cook a lot of the surround paint off. While this is not the ideal fix, it will allow you to not have repaint right now if a repaint is not in your budget.

If your in the middle of fixing the car. Definately replace it with some sheet metal. However, I wouldn't stop at just that location. Seeing there is holes there, more than likely, you have holes in the rear windo as well. It also looks like there bondo around the outside of the pillar. It may just be the picture, but it looks cracked towards the upper right hand side.

But I would remove all paint around all window areas and the rear package tray as well since that area was a pretty common place for rust to be. And, since who ever owned the car previously did this, I would imagine the rest of the car would suspect for the same bondo type of fixes. Also, use a peen hammer to test the metal. If its weak, the hammer will poke thru letting you know it has to be replaced. Sometimes, metal that looks ok is really rotted on the backside. the bad part is, it looks like the damage goes beyond the window channel and extends into the top of the roof. Depending on how bad everything is, you may be in for an entire top replacement. Its a very time consuming process, but sometimes the only thing that really works. Especially on previous vinyl top cars.

As for coating any repair. use weld thru primer. Once its welded into place, use an epoxy primer to seal everything.

Looks almost exactly like mine did, and I ended up having a lot more rust. I replaced the roof on my car, along with a bunch of other metal. I also used Eastwood Rust converter and then rust encapsulator inside the cavities. I attached a nozzle like you would find on a can of WD-40 and got it inside all the crevices.

      Im with Joe,

After all the work to repair that section it would be more cost effective to replace the roof skin. That is if you are planning on doing full paint.
After you pull the roof I am sure you will find more. Luckily they sell everything you might need.

If you do decide to repair that corner section where it meets the a pillar is full of lead and some braze filler. Carefull with the welding.
