      Anyone live in Virginia?

We may be moving near Newport News, VA area for my work. Wondering if anyone else lives near. I want to live in Williamsburg, wife wants to be closer to Virginia Beach.

Depending on how orders go, I may be moving to Oceana (Va Beach). Time will tell.

I live in suffolk. Good place if you are into cars/bikes.

Three good autox clubs (2 VA beach, 1 richmond)
3 drag strips with in hour drive (2 richmond, 1 NC)
      VIR 3 hours away
      Summit point 4 hours
      CMP 6 hours
Lots of good twisties in the blue ridge mountians (about 3-4hour drive)
Within a days drive you got Road Atlanta, Barber, and Tail of the Dragon.

I don't think I want to live in Hampton, Newport News area, or Virginia Beach. I have 2 kids, 8 & 4.

Scot, If it was my choice I would probably choose the Williamsburg, Yorktown, Suffolk area or just over the Carolina line.. With any of these areas you would still be close to Va. Beach. Home prices would also be better I would think.

I was in W-burg on business trip for 3 weeks. It was great. You are close to alot of historical attractions (Colonial W-burg/ Jamestown) and it has a nice collection of shops (New Town), eateries, and entertainment. There is a huge outlet mall with great stores. The neighborhoods just seem cleaner. It would be a much better growing environment for little ones and safer to boot. I would say W-burg is 90% safer than Va. Beach and Newport News. William and Mary College is near Colonial Williamsburg and the kids are great, not much of a party school in the sense of couch burnings in the street.

I have also been to Va. Beach numerous times and while I had fun there, partying, it was no place I would want to move my wife and kid. It would be better to move to Va. Beach if you were single! Of course there are some pretty nice pads in Va Beach too. There are some pretty thuggish types and while there are pockets of nice homes and established folk, your kids are going to be going to school with people outside of those havens and your going to be interacting out in public with a different set of folks than in Williamsburg. Va. Beach traffic is the worst I've almost ever seen.

Areas that I find suitable for my family are cleanliness of the town, the kind of kids my child may encounter at school (especially H.S.),traffic, shopping/grocery, scenic running (I like to run!).

I would just try and live on what ever side of the tunnle you work on. Traffice is horrible at rush hour.

I live in Alexandria, VA but we own a condo in Va Bch about a mile off the Ocean. Va Bch would be a great place to live and raise a family IMHO. Public schools are ranked EXTREMELY high. Some of them are nationally ranked in the top 100 and even outperform some of the northern VA public schools around me.

The beaches are extremely clean, crime is much lower than the DC area I live in. Friday and Saturday nights have partying going on at the beach but that's to be expected.

The wife and I plan on retiring there someday and my daughter who is going to school to be an elementary school teacher wants to look for a teaching job there. Housing is VERY reasonable. Of course I'm comparing it to northern VA prices to take that for what it's worth.

I would strongly encourage you to do some research on Va Bch - you may be surprised!!

There are several forum members in the northern part of the commonwealth, just outside of DC.

Speaking of which, hi Joe! I'm Ross, I'm in Arlington.

If you are working in newport news, suffolk would be a good place to live commute wise. Traffic on the James river bridge is pretty light compared to the tunnels. I don't think the schools are very good though... but I don't have kids so I don't pay much attention to that stuff.

Chesapeake is a pretty good drive with a tunnel which is no fun during rush hour.

If you are looking for a little bit of land with your house you will find more selection in suffolk. Suffolk has some nice housing developments as well (eagle harbor on 17 near the James river bridge), but not as many as Chesapeake. Chesapeake will put you closer to shopping malls, resturants, etc.
