looking for gauges that are black when off

I am wondering if anyone knows a company who sells gauges that appear completely dark when the car is off but light up once you start it. Doesn't have to be digital a good analog gauge would work. I am looking for a 3 3/8 indash speedo and tach, and a multi gauge for fuel level, temp, oil press and volt. or just a fuel gauge.

Anyone know of such a series of gauges. please let me know

      Thanks

      Tim

Autometer Nexus, they use stepper motors that look pretty cool when you turn them on as well

I contacted Autometer to see if the Nexus line had speedo and Tack in 5" so I could use them in-dash on my 67, but they said no. No plans either :(

I really dig those gauges and am completely bummed about the absense of the 5"!

Beware though, they are very, very expensive!

Spek gauges are available with a smoked lense, which will appear black when off.

Why not have them custom built?

Can you do black when off? That's one thing I think is real cool abuot the Nexus. I'm working on a design for custom gauges and when I'm ready I'll send them over.

We usually do a dark lens and the backlit dials show through

In my shop installs, I've installed quite a few Nexus gauges and you really need to pay attention to the routing of the gauges leads...ie don't route them them alongside any other 12v carrying wires. You run the risk of picking up RF interference which can make the tach jump around sometimes....as well as trigger the warning indicators on all the gauges intermittently. The trickiest problem I had with them is getting the value set on the fuel gauge...it would not read correct when I selected the 0-90 ohm value so I had to use the custom calibration value. And, as far as fuel level, the instructions as to how to set it are not right...I had to talk to Autometer tech to find out why the level would not read-they told me to set it using a custom mode.
Anyway, the nexus gauges are pretty freakin cool-they have playback features, programmable warning indicators, multiple color choices, etc.

Nice demo of the Nexus gauges: http://www.autometer.com/demos/nexus/

According to their website, the Elite series features a blacked out dial when off.

Price comparo, it seems the Nexus are around $250ea, the Elite around $200ea, (Elite do not need the controller box the Nexus do)

After speaking with Mark from New Vintage, I'm doing some custom gauges to match my build. I'll have them start on em the end of the month. You should seriously consider going that route because it will save a bunch of coin over Nexus, probably the Elite too but I'm not sure, and you'll get something that matches your build and sets of your interior. He mentioned they can do a dark lens too if that's a must have.

The big diff is the Nexus gauges have adjustable warning indicators and callback features...nobody else offers it that I am aware of. I'm building a carbon fiber dash cluster using these gauges for a 1966 Chevelle that'll look killer....of course, I am doing a fiberglass console to match it.

The Spek gauges have programmable warning indicators, and from what I've seen, they are quite a bit more sophisticated than the Nexus. A lot of NASCAR cars are using these SPEK gauges because they can program yellow & red warning lights for pit road speeds.

Sorry for the shameless plug, but our 2020, 1969, 1965 and Redlines have peak recall and hi/low warnings on the dial or through an output, pretty slick and all for about 1/2 of the nexus sets
I really need to sign up to be a sponsor, ill do that now....
