Easiest way to get to the oil pan to remove old & install new pan.... Tips, secrets, thoughts, opinions...?



My oil pan is literally beat up. Dented to hell and back. Needs to be changed out, so help me out if you can!

I'd probably pull the motor.

You should be able to pull it easy enough without pulling motor...I dropped the pan off my 70 Monte with no hassles way back in the day-I have a bad timing chain (stock) and I dropped the pan, cleaned it out, pulled the timign cover, put a new chain in, installed new oil pump and sealed it up with a 1-piece Fel-Pro oil pan gasket. Took me about 4 hours total and I just had the car set up on ramps up front and stands in the rear. Your Poncho 400 motor may require pulling engine to get the pan off but I doubt it-A-body engine cradles have plenty of room between them and the oil pan. If you have at least 2.5" clearance I'd say you can do it with motor in car.

By the time you disconnect everything needed to get the engine high enough to get the pan out, you might as well just pull it all the way out and do it on the engine stand where you can get the pan to seal up right.

Or you can struggle laying on your back with the engine sitting halfway out of the engine compartment, hanging from your hoist.

The oil pans on Pontiac A-body cars don't come out easy at all, do yourself a huge favor and pull the engine.
