      Exhaust Sizing

      Quick question...

I have a GM zz383 engine which I am installing in my '70 Camaro. It will be running with a 680cfm Quickfuel carb going into Dynatech headers with 1-3/4" primaries and 3" collectors. When I was running this engine in my totalled '68 I was using a 2.5" Magnaflow exhaust kit (w/ x-pipe) with great results.

Now I am torn between a Magnaflow 2.5" w/ x-pipe kit and a 3" kit of the same type. My only reasoning for sticking with the 2.5" pipes is because I do not want to lose too much back-pressure, and the motor ran great with that setup before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Matt

If you plan on keep that motor as its relatively tame power level, stay at 2.5".

If you think you are going to add power to the 500hp+ level, you may want to go 3" now.

Like they said. No need for 3" in that kind of a powertrain.

      Alright 2.5" it is.

Another question just came up by the way...

I ordered Dynatech headers for this engine thinking that they were fully 1-3/4", but realized that they step from 1-3/4" to 1-7/8". That seems to me like it would be too large for this combo. What do you guys think about exchanging these headers for a set of 1-5/8 stepped to 1-3/4" Dynatech headers?

Thanks a lot for all of the help guys.
