Rack & Pinion for '61 Bel Air

I just got my Bel Air 409 on the road after about a year and the one negative is the steering is over boosted and the on center feel is mediocre at best. It has a 605 box which I tried to replace with a tighter CPP unit but this hit the new radiator so it was a no go. I had put a Heidt PS proportioning valve but had to disconnect (or so I was told by manufacturer) when I added a hydroboost unit so the car would actually stop. I want to convert to R&P but the only model specific unit I can find is by Unisteer and it states its for a small block. I would prefer not to have to go to a custom rack--any direction would be most appreciated.

Sounds like a long way to go to accomodate a radiator... maybe you want to rethink the radiator?

The radiator came before the steering box and it is keeping the iron 409 much cooler than stock on these recent hot days, so it definitely is a keeper. Thanks for the tip.

are you still running the stock steering wheel? you could steer an oil tanker with one of those things..
if so, try a smaller one. you can buy a cheap small diameter Grant wheel for $30 and an adapter kit for about the same price.. if you like the smaller wheel, then sell the cheapie wheel (or put it on your riding mower or something) and get a better aftermarket wheel.
