      Computer controlled Q-Jet

Can anyone tell me if I can unhook the computer in my dad's '87 Monte SS and still have the computer controlled carb work? The motor is a 355 built by Tony Bischoff at BES, it has Trick Flow twisted wedge heads, edelbrock performer RPM Q-Jet intake and a Carb Shop Q-Jet. I'm going to put a regular HEI distributor in it and was wondering if the carb would operate when I unhook the computer. I don't know what the guy was thinking when he tried to control a custom 355 engine with a computer that thinks it's a stock 305. How is that gonna work? I'm hoping that once I rid the car of the computer this thing will run much better. There are plans to replace the carb, but if I can get away with just unhooking the computer from it for now, that would be good.
Anyone that can shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated!

If your running a regular HEI then you'll have to run a regular carb. There's alot of good guys with good answers on the Montes over at MonteCarloSS.com. I've gotten alot of great ideas from them.

      It won't work.

For one, the mixture control solenoid controls the primary fuel metering. If it's unplugged, it would run, but so badly it wouldn't be driveable.

      This.

IIRC it'll run rich. Get a new carb. Got all that $$ for a BES engine, spring for a carb!

I converted over to a non-ccc system on my 84 Z28 back in the day. Popped in a traditional HEI and Holley 650 vacuum secondary spreadbore in an afternoon. The thing ran better, faster, cleaner and got better gas mileage than it ever had with the computer.

Thanks for the info guys. I thought that's what we would be facing, but wanted a little confirmation.
Bonzo, the motor was in the car when my dad bought it, it's been together for a while, low miles though, Tony's prices have gone up considerable since he built this one! lol

What would you guys suggest as far as what carb? Holley 750 vacuum secondaries? The motor is a 355 with Trick Flow twisted wedge heads, 9.5:1 comp ratio, 224/234 @ .050 and .465/.488 with a fairbanks 200r4 and a 2400 stall. It's a street car, wont ever see any track time or hard thrashing (with my dad behind the wheel). He has owned the car for about 8 months and we are yet to get it to where it's fun to drive! Any help is greatly appreciated!

I made a suggestion on your other post.

Post a pic of that Qjet as I can tell you if it can be converted.

I did one that was stock on my 86' Chevy pick up.

If running the 2004r trans it could affect the lock up converter as well. A lock up kit from any of the trans company or Summit will fix that but i imagine your not running that trans unless it's built.
