As best I can tell, SCCA Road Rallys are TSD rallys, not true rally races. TSD is good stuff though, and generally pretty darn safe unless you do something particularly stupid. I'm trying to get ready to run my first rallycross here in Florida in mid-August with my XR4TI, but we'll see if it's prepared by then.

A couple of years ago I would have suggested the No Frills Iron Bottom Motoring Tour. However, that event died. There are always rumors of underground replacements happening.

New Years Day in SoCal is an infamous day for unofficial road rallies. Going to the Cars and Coffee meet in Irvine the weeks prior should get you the info you need for the "tour of orange." I believe that one is pretty legal and tame. Others can be pretty hardcore, with people running their favorite local canyons.
