      Bringing it back.....

I was thinking about this the other day as I flipped through Sportscar magazine. I saw several companies advertising racecar insurance. In the case of our dual purpose cars what are you guys doing. I realize that piling up your car on an autocross is unlikely, although the tight confines of a GG autocross certainly lends itself to sheetmetal damage. When you are at an event like a run to ___ event or motorstate are you just shaking the dice and hoping you don't crash? Can you have two policies, one for street driving and one for racing? Would a regualr insurance company drop you if they found out about your race car policy?

      READ your policy!

Would you get dropped if you have 2 policies on the same car. Maybe? Maybe not? Read your primary policy. The racing insurance coverage would be "gap" insurance coverage for your car that your original insuror does not cover or is specifically excluded from their policy if all that policy does is cover your vehicle in the paddock and on the track. Then againi your regular insurance policy may/probably specifically excludes your use of your car in this type of event. If you purchased a policy with an exclusion specifically saying you cannot use your car in any type of track you may be violating the terms or your primary policy since why would you need racing insurance coverage if you were not going race your car?

Most regular and collector car policies specifically state and EXCLUDE the use of your car in any timed event, on track event or autocross event. You just might have a problem with your regular insurance policy if you autocross your car this weekend and then wreck your car in a normal street accident 5 months later. Example:

You autocross your Camaro at the May 2011 Goodguys event or RTMC in Nashville, Tn. Nick and Steve are there and they like your car so 3 months later there are on-track pictures of your Camaro autocrossing in Camaro Performers and also maybe the Goodguys Gazette. BOOM! You have an on-street accident in your Camaro 5 mohths later in October 2011. Car is damaged enough to file a claim on YOUR insurance policy (your fault, other driver had no insurance whatever). The adjuster comes out to look at your car. Hey! I remember this car from Camaro Performers or the Goodguys Gazette. He was autcrossing the car. The policy you have specifically states the car will not be used in this type of event and YOU the owner signed and payed for the policy and entered into an insurance contract. Now there is photographic PROOF that you have voided the terms of the agreed contract and therefore we (the insuror) are denying your claim since your voided the insurance contract 5 months earlier by using your car in a timed event that is clearly excluded from the policy and you agreed NOT to use your car in any event of that type. They have the photographic evidence.

      CLAIM DENIED!!!!

      Extreme? Certainly! Possible? YES!!!

If you have a Haggarty, Grundy or other carrier policy they specifically make you sign a form that you will NEVER EVER use your car in this type of event. Again READ YOUR POLICY! Just another way to wiggle out of paying a claim with the popularity of car events today. This exclusion and the other requirements stated in the policy is why collector car policies are so cheap. These policies severely limit the exposure of the insuror.

Make sure the policy you buy fits you needs, wants and desires.

The above example is NOT illustrating the absurd with an absurd response. This could really happen!!!

Yes most folks are "hoping" nothing happens at a track day event with their car and they will not crash it.

Just an FYI I have Haggarty and never signed a form stating no racing events (I'm in CA maybe its different in other states). However the policy simply states no coverage on track, but in pits, staging or parking/viewing area I'm covered fine.

Listen to me. Don't bother with any of this crap...just go to this website and talk to Morgan. He is a memeber on this site and I have my insurance through him. He is my broker for Hagery and offers track insurance. Don't bother with any other company b/c you will most likely get screwed. Morgan is a racer at heart and he understands what we do. Trust me on this...

I understand that one of the OEM's was using a similiar technique to deny warranty coverage to autocrossers- after they marrketed the car as a class winner. When a customer came in with a major powertrain warranty claim, they would search local autocross and lap time websites for the name and model.

A second for Morgan Duffy. I do not use his company yet as my car is still in process, but when done I will be getting my insurance there. Him and I were in high school together, he got his 68 Camaro before he could drive and the passion started. He knows what these cars mean to us.
