dont worry about the seal since it can and will be pushed away by the yoke as needed. if youre worried about it being too long its really simple to tell. put the stands under the rear so the weight is on the axle, disconnect from the pinion yoke and slide the ds as far forward as it will go. you will most likely have to push hard if the seal hits before it bottoms out. if you have ~3/4 - 1" of forward movement youre good to go. most likely if you were able to install the ds without too much effort, its not going to be too long.

well the u joint caps are all larger than 1" which means you have at least 1/2" of clearance. if its not tight going in you have even more. you shouldnt have an issue with it being too long.

now back to the new whine.....

Personally I think that your driveshaft is the perfect length. It is as long as it can be while still allowing easy installation. In my opinion it is definitely not bottoming out while you are driving.

We can estimate (OUR) drive shaft length by looking at how much yoke is showing beyond the seal because we KNOW the yoke and sell lots of them. With other yokes the output shaft can bottom out shorter or longer because of the design of the yoke. I would recommend that you bottom the yoke out (push it into the back of the transmission as far as it will go) and make a measurement. Then hook the drive shaft up to the pinion yoke and make another measurement. The industry standard (depending on who you talk to) is 3/4" to 1". We use 7/8". So when the suspension is traveling you have a 7/8" buffer. I feel safe with 1/2" with most muscle cars because the suspension is usually beefed up and doesn't travel like a grocery getter. If you have a 4 link or truck arm suspension you could get away with less. The whole objective is that you don't push the transmission output shaft forward and do damage. The trans whine is likely caused by some part of the body touching the drive train. If it didn't do this before I would check to make sure you have slip yoke clearance and body/frame to drive line clearance.

Jim,i had the slip yoke you guys use on my steel shaft, its the same measurements as my new one from Mark Williams slip yoke,i can push the slip yoke into the back of the output shaft enough or else i would`nt of been able to remove the driveshaft to clear the rear yoke,i dont have any clearance issues with anything touching the drivetrain,i never did,i`ve put 6k miles on this car and drivetrain in 3 years with the steel shaft without an issues so why would anything be touching now?

      Thanks
