? mounting Autometer gauges.

I am trying to figure out how to mount a full set of Autometer gauges in an 80s G body. The problem is they are small & I want mount them in the stock location. I want to go with Autometer, but in the models I like the smallest they make is 2-1/16" to fit in the center 4 spots:



So for those of you that have mounted these gauges, is the area that is represented by dimension "A" in the below image able to be trimmed so they can be mounted closer together?

Doesn't gain alot, but any bit helps.
