Crossmember Fabrication

My New headers on my GTO may hit the factory crossmember and I am looking for options. I was going to make a new crossmember out of 1" square tubing, but I am not sure if that will be strong enough. Thoughts?

you would need to gussett any stressed areas,
minumum .125 wall, think of the stess this handles.

Ever think about getting some chromoly tubing and bending one to fit your needs? Popular Hot Rodding did one on their project Laguna in an article awhile ago, very simple and came out very nice. As soon as I get the engine and trans mocked up in my car i'll be doing the same thing.

While Chromoly is definitely overkill for this part on most vehicles, standard 1.75" .120 wall DOM would be plenty strong and easy to work with if you have the right tools. Many times I just cut the factory one apart and make it fit. Then weld it all up and paint.

Many options depending on your skill set and/or tools...or just how big your pocket book is. Send some pictures. If you need just a small amout of room then scalloping a small curve out will do. Then welding a shaped patch back in with similar wall thinckness is typically how it is done. If your looking for something more ellaborate let me know and I can get you directed in the correct direction.
