      Spal controller question

I have an older SPAL FAN-PWM controller. It's probably the original version based dates of several posts. I have heard that was an issue with the first two versions.
So my questuions are this. What were the issues with the first two versions of the SPAL fan controller. The fan set up I plan to use is a dual fan set up from a 4th gen Trans Am. If my memory is correct thes fans only draw about 20 - 25 amps. Will this controller be ok for these fans?? I do have the extra harness required for dual fan operation as well as the SPAL temp sensor. I just don't want to install anything electrical that may be suspect, can you say fire?, in my car.

If this controller isn't a good one to use I like the Dakota Digital set up. Looks simple and tuneable.

Do a search on this messageboard. I think the issues were more related to using the SPAL with a high-current fan such as the Mark VIII...

I found a cpl of those. Just was making sure there weren't any other issues. Thanks.

Ok I was finally able to get my information straight. I was talking to the wrong company. I was able to talk to SPAL USA and they confirmed that the controller I have is the 1st version. It will be ok as long as my fans don't pull more than 20 amps. The limit was 25 but the tech told me to be safe to stay under 20 amps. So I'll pull out the old amp meter tonight and see what they draw. I checked them a while back and I think they only drew 20 amps. So I should be ok. But I might put it up on eBay anyway and either buy the V3 controller or the one from Dakota Digital which may work with the temp sensor from my Autometer gauge. So I'm not mad at A1 Electric anymore.

I'll keep you in mind if I need to buy a new controller. I plan to check the amps when I get home tonight.

It's the over current/under current protection circuit that is the problem. Basically, you will never be able to run a high output fan with a Spal controller. It's almost as though they don't want the popularity of factory electric fans to spread because it may lead to more and more people NOT buying Spal's fans...just there controllers. So, by not providing high output controllers, they sort of push lower CFM drawing fans to their consumers. Dakota Digital is probably the best way to go as far as controllers go imo. Somebody needs to make a true pwm controller that can handle an inrush of 150 amps and handle a nominal 60 amps with auto AC feature (no jumpers!) and be programmable via pushbuttons...how hard can that possibly be?
