      Need new engine..

over the weekend i blew my engine on my 69 camaro.
i added up the numbers and to rebuild/duplicate my current engine wont be worth the cost...
(im kind of starting from scratch now..except ive still got my 350turbo trans ..)

i was looking at the year one 350 crate engine (seems like most bang for the buck)..
any other suggestions? (like just bitting the bullet and getting an LS series engine?)

and also i will be using this car as a daily/weekend driver..so some sort reliability will be nice. (like you can even get any reliability.. )

      Hot Rod,

What kind of power are you looking to make and what's your budget?, LS's are great engines, just make sure that you consider the total cost of the swap, motor mounts, headers, radiator and other issues, you probably can do the swap cheaper and with less labor by doing it with a Gen1 engine.

I havnt come up with a budget yet. im currently working on that. but my main aspect is lets say i pick up the CT350PC1 around 3k ..would it have been worth spending more or going with a different engine for the same price while im in the market for a new one ya know?

Thanks! ya my only concern with going with a gen1 ls..is that im tossing in alot of money as is for the mounts,headers,radiator,ect..if i do decide to get a ls series would it be worth getting a gen4 since im already putting in the parts for one? or should i spend that money i save with going with a gen1 on improving that engine? (sorry lots of questions)

as you can see im anxious to get the best for my dollar ya know?

as for power...nothing under 400hp..this is american muscle..i wanna keep those ricers far away and maybe take on some c6s (or at least give them a good run for their money)

Thanks for the run down! my only concern with going with a stroker is, do i risk reliability compared to the 350?

I can't imagine a year one motor could cost less than a comparable summit motor?

      Hot Rod,
I did a quick check at Summit and this was the closest thing that I could find to the Year One, less power, no intake manifold and more $$. The 383 will be as reliable as the 350 as long as you keep it in the recommended rpm range. The Year One also comes with a 1 year warantee.

I'll add another option. I believe the GM L31 Vortec truck motor is the best bang for the buck. It is about $2200 from Summit. This is a brand new 4 bolt main engine with a roller cam and vortec heads. It is rated at 260 HP with cast iron exhaust manifolds and a stock fuel injection. Add a decent cam and springs plus headers and you are near 400 HP. Plus you have a 2 year warrenty that can be serviced at any GM dealer. If you want good fuel economy, keep the stock cam. It should be close to 290+ HP with a 4 bbl and headers.

You should be able to do an LS swap for ~$5k. Take a look at this http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conver...de-1500-a.html

Here's an LS option that requires no ECM or special fuel tank/pump assembly. It does require motor mount adapters that are available and a flexplate adapter to work with 350 trans. also available. It is over your 5k budget though, but it is one way to do the LS swap.........

Only on the cam and only if you use a non-GMPP cam.

An LS option below 5K would be to get a used LQ9 engine. They can be had for less than $1500 with very low miles (under 20K). Install a carb intake and controler for the coils. Pick up a set of used car exhaust manifolds, (LS2) and you have the engine for about 3K. Leaves plenty for motor mounts and to hook up the exhaust and trany.

I think that your first impulse was the best especially if you are wanting 500hp. if your not looking for that much hp then some of the other suggestions are good to.

Sweet thanks for your input! ya im really leaning towards the Year One engines..seems to be exactly what i need. Should i stick with my 350 turbo tranny? or do you suggest something else?

And if i feel like just browsing..does anyone know of some good LS gen 3+ post?
