Surface Rust on Flywheel
While awaiting installation in my car, my flywheel and pressure plate has collected some surface rust. The garage I was keeping these in (at a friends house) apparently had a leaky roof and he didn't know it. Boxes got wet and now the flywheel and pressure plate has some rust, nothing major.
What would you suggest to remove the rust and leave a good surface for the clutch? Sandpaper? What grit? SOS or Brillo pads maybe?
Thanks

You can try some 80 grit, but if you can have a machine shop turn them, it would be preferable.
Will it wipe off with brake cleaner?
03-08-2010 #3I tried the brake parts cleaner but it didn't work.
I just had the flywheel balanced with the engine in November and was hoping I wouldn't have to go the resurfacing route. It's not really all that bad, I just wanted to clean it up the best way without it.
Will having the flywheel resurfaced after it had been balanced affect the balancing any? It's an externally balanced 400 Chevy flywheel.Doug Gulley

Having the fly wheel cut will not effect the balance. If the rust doesn't rub out with w/ steel wool, you should have it cut.
